loselose | Am I too frugal!? |
I am a stay home mom, I have 2 kids with and married for 7 years. We have 150k in cash, 200k in investment, 500k for retirement so far and 400k of equity on the house. I feel that i should save more money if i want to retire and still live in the expensive suburbs we live in right now. So, i don't drive expensive cars, i don't splurge on shopping, food and vacations. I spend a reasonable amount of life, but my hubby says i am too frugal and should live up a little and not to worry too much about money.
Is he right or should we save more? Additional Details FYI, 3 of us share the same account to ask and answer questions. sorry for the confusion to some of you. |

It sounds like you are doing great. You may benefit from doing a check up with a financial pro too.
think about what your life is going to be like when you retire---
--- estimate you can take 3-5% off of your total savings without really dipping into the principal (if it is invested correctly)
so based off estimated return, and how many years you have left- are you on track to give yourself the type of income you need?? only you and a financial pro can answer this based off of your personal numbers.
once you are on track, you will feel comfortable taking that vacation, or splurging, etc. but dont forget you have a few kids to put through school!
PS- do you think you might hang out with my girlfriend and share your frugal views? lol |

You did a good job at saving. Since you have kids you need to make sure you have LIFE INSURANCE. For example if something were to happen to your husband at least you have that as back up. Make sure you know how much you need a month for the mortgage and bills. If you can pay of your house do so it will save in interest. |

Live it up but be smart |

You have a pretty healthy savings going so you can afford to splurge a little. It sounds like your husband makes pretty good money so you shouldn't worry too much about living it up a little.
A little off topic but you have a lot of cash, you might want to think about reallocating about $50k or so into investments or retirment. |

You should spend on things that are worth it to you. What these things are vary by individual. It is important, however, that you plan for the future and secure it financially. You don't want to be 70 and stressed, right? Just stay focused but remember that the world could change in a blink of an eye so enjoy the now as well. |

I would keep on the track that you are on. You don't need to be more frugal, but keep as you are. Let other people drive the flashy cars and spend a lot on them and insurance.
There are some rough times coming, and it is best to be ready. You can never have too much set aside for retirement.
Maybe to make hubby feel a little better, suggest spending a little on an extra nice vacation ( with or "without" the kids ). |

You are both right. But....who knows what tomorrow will bring. Go treat yourself and have a little fun. Remember, you can't take it with you. |

over here at singapore, it is sad that many old people i mean in their 70s still need to worry about their daily 3 meals and we were encouraged to work as old as we could. its pathetic as at that age, they should be happily retire and doing some meaningful activities. its good that u are maintaining the current spending habit. but i would say that as u grow older, it will be more worthwhile u lead a more simple but meaningful life instead of the current expensive suburbs. in that case u will be able to live without worry esp. u need $ for healthcare. |

Take a few vacations.
I have a lot of extra money in the bank, so i mostly save it, but i also go on vacations whenever there's a long weekend for my kids. |

Due to your income / saving you will need 30 to 40K for each kid in college. (and the cost will go up) With your saving - income you will not be getting any Fed help. You will I hope get loans and scholarships for the kids.
Do keep being frugal, however do take a somewhat nice vaction now and then. You want to enjoy life and see new things. Without wasting money. after all we do not live forever, as careful as you may be the nut next to you may have his ticket punched at the wrong time.
(as they say about flying, what if it is the pilots time to go??) |

really depends on how close you are to retirement and what are your liabilities. You are definitely on the right track. It sounds like you are in good financial shape, have good income and probably could afford to live it up a little. |
