Bipsy B | Am i middle class or upper class? |
I am 25 years old, bachelor's and master's degree, no debt, and have $550K in the stock market (used to be $650 but took a hit in the recent volatility). i'm not trying to show off or anything. i'm just honestly curious: am i considered "middle class" or "upper class"? Or is it really geographically specific (i.e. in most places I would be considered upper class, but in certain places, like San Francisco or New York City, I would only be middle class?) |

Depends on your income, money in the stock market doesn't mean anything till you sell and take the cash, you could lose it all in a day if some tragedy happens. |

If you are using your money wisely and are satisfied with your life in general, you are rich.
If you are interested in hoarding more and more money instead of using it and you are not satisified with your life, you are poor. |

At best you're upper middle class.
This would be dependent upon you being of 'independent means', in other words, not having to ever work and carrying no debt.
Upper class requires heritage.
There is the possibility that you are, in fact, working class. Most people are and simply don't realise it because they don't work "in t' mill". In truth, if your security or lifestyle relies on an earned income, or you can be sacked, then you are working class. |

Well you are sure off to a good start, what ever the group agrees on. You are halfway to being a millionaire. Once you get there, you should be able to buy a nice teardown in Ca, or a distressed condo in Miam. I'm more concerned about your expenses and your income than your assets. A million doesn't buy what it used to, whether it's in real estate or gold.... better keep saving! |

The question here is are you from 'old money' or part of the 'noveau riche', you don't reveal this, added to this you need to ask the question. To me, a poor working class Honours Graduate, this tells me that you belong to the latter (noveau riche) and as such will never gain full acceptance in the world of the 'Upper Class'. Be happy being a self made success in the middle class, or the working class where ever your roots belong, class consciousness is no more than ego preening, a sign of insecurity. |

I agree with the first answer, you're between the middle n upper class. |

First, it depends on who you ask. Second, most class definitions are based on income, not savings. It looks like you have a great retirement fund started, and many people would call you rich. They don't realize that with inflation, you may need up to a million dollars a year by the time you retire to live an upper middle class lifestyle. It's a good thing you got started early! The good news is, even with recent volatility, you can expect at least an average of 8% per year on your stock portfolio, and inflation is only kicking you for 3% a year.
Second, it also depends on where you live. If you live in Kansas, you could buy a nice house for 300,000 dollars. The same house in New York City or San Francisco would cost $1M.
Third, class divisions get a bit iffy the higher you go. If you make 100K a year, but pay a 35% income tax rate, and so only take home $65K, do you count as middle or upper class? Is someone who takes home $65K really in the same category as someone who takes home $500K? |

Middle class im being honest |

Middle class is defined loosely as income from 40,000 to 200,000 per year. Of course, NO amount of income can put you in a class if you have no morals. And money can't buy 'em.
And yes, in certain parts of New York City and the Middle East you would certainly be considered among the lepers of the colony financially. |

I recommend - with your money - to look into investing where you can make money and not worry what people think you are in - as per class. Invest in the FOREX market. But be certain you KNOW technical analysis. |

100% depends on where you live. 550k would get you a great life in Des Moines and in the major cities in which you speak, the money isn't a lot, but you are far ahead of many people that would consider themselves mid class. Like those middle aged people driving 323 BMW's. You are good and are in the upper class of living standards where ever you go. |

In order to be considered upper class you would really need to be living in an extremely low income area. It sounds like you are well educated, but a $550,000 net worth really won't get you too far in most places in the developed US. |

well does it really matter and you being middle class or upper class depends on the way you have been bought up. |
