Fatima A | Annual income: $150k. Is it considerable savings not to run dishwasher and dryers and do these manually? |
My husband believes that we can save more $$s by washing dishes manually and drying clothes by using a line-dryer in the backyard. I do have 2 kids and expecting a third. We both work full-time. I wanted to know whether it's worth the time and effort to do these tasks manually. |

Hand washing the dishes probably wastes more water.
Laundry on a line smells better. costs nothing, hard to beat that.
With that kind of income your time is best spent investing for your future and those three kids college funds. watching the market, learning about mutual funds. |

That seems a bit ridiculous with $150k a year income. Besides hand washing dishes really doesn't save much more water or money if any at all... you actually might save more by using a dishwasher. I would tell him to shutup and stop being ridiculous. There are many other much more practical things a person can do to save money.
In fact, you should tell him you want to stay home and become a housewife, if not for real... it would be funny to say as a joke. But seriously kids really need moms at home these days taking care of them so they can grow up to be overall healthy adults. |

You can buy energy saver appliances.....and they also have light bulbs that only use 13w but are 60w bulbs...these are also considered energy savers. Anything with a blue star will help you in the long run..... also, make sure your house is insulated so you wont be wasting money and have energy saver windows and doors. |

Dishwasher- I've heard its the same amount to do it manually ... as for hanging your clothes - yes, that will be cheaper because its free labor (husband)... tell him to go for it --- and tell him if he smokes, or drinks coffee- it would be cheaper to drink water from the tap- and if he speeds when he drives, tell him it saves gas to go 55. so don't speed! and, when his favorite sport is on tv- is cheaper just to turn the tv off-- saves on electricity.

I AGREE THAT ENERGY IS EXPENSIVE.DRYERS ARE POWER SUCKERS. A PLAN OF ACTION MIGHT INCLUDE A TIME MANAGEMENT PLAN AS WELL . WITH BOTH WORKING. TIME TO LINE CLOTHES, TO DRY. IS QUESTIONABLE.THE AMOUNT OF MONEY YOU HAVE EACH MO.AFTER EXPENSIVES. CAN BE ADJUSTED TO ALLOW FOR THE POWER YOU NEED TO DO LAUNDRY..CUT COST IN ANOTHER AREA THAT DOESN'THAVE SUCH A BIG IMPACT ON DAILY LIVING.CHANGING SPENDING HABITS, MAY SOLVE THIS PROBLEM.GOOD LUCK.. OK, here is the thing. In the long run you will save money with one more than the other. The dishwasher you can save just as much money as long as you wait until it is full before running it. Most people waste the most money by running a partially filled dishwasher. As far as the drying clothes thing goes, I would suggest hanging them out, if you can, for a while until they have dried mostly, then put them in the dryer for a short while to loosen them up and freshen them. That will save on the elcectric bill alot more than you think it will. One last thing, if you can spend the money, or even if in slow installments, change all your standard light-bulbs to compact flourescents. That will save as well. Currently, I can turn on every light in my apartment and use less electricity than two standard 100 watt lightbulbs thanks to CFLs. Try to have as many flourescent lights in your house as possible as they use less electricity by a long shot over most other bulbs (except LEDs but those are VERY expensive to buy). I gaurantee you will see a signifcant change in your electric bill once you have your whole place changed over to fourescents. Hope this helps.
P.S. Tell him that if he really wants to save this money, he needs to put some of his tie into it as well and help with it some. If he is not willing to do that, then he is not as worried about saving the money as he makes you think. |

With the dishwasher, it usually uses less water than you do handwashing, HOWEVER, to save energy, use the dishwasher to wash the dishes but TURN OFF the drying feature. When the dishwasher is done, crack it open to allow the dishes to air dry. This is a good compromise and will save energy.
As for hanging up clothes outside, this will save in energy, but not time. You also need to check and make sure if you live in a neighborhood with covenants, that you are allowed to have a clothesline. Many subdivisions have restrictions against clotheslines.
Other ways to save energy:
Switch to compact flourescent bulbs, especially in hard to change lights, they last a long time and use a lot less energy.
Unplug your phone chargers, etc. when you are not charging the phone. The chargers still pull energy. If you have a charging station, plug everything into a surge protector, charge at night, and turn off the power switch on the surge protector during the day.
Get a programmable thermostat.
Turn off your computer when you are not using it.
Use solar lights in the yard rather than power lights.
With both of you working full time, I don't recommend anything time consuming. I'd still use my dryer because it's just not worth the time I'd have to spend outside hanging up and taking down clothes. Plus, I do laundry in the evenings. Also, you have to be careful of the sun fading your clothes. As a compromise, you could hang up whites, sheets and towels outside, but dry the other clothes.
Good luck! |

Yes, you will save money. You will also be helping save the earth.
However, it's a drop in the bucket for both. |
