Any advice for getting back $2000 loaned to a boyfriend 18 months ago?

I've sent him requests for payment, but he refuses to pay up. I even wrote a letter of demand, but to no avail. Is it worth taking him to the small claims court? What are my chances.

If you have nothing to demonstrate it was a loan, it will probably be considered a gift. Absent a written contract, the circumstances surrounding the loan will be the most important factor in determining whether it was a loan or gift.

If it is decided to be a gift, you cannot recover.

Get your facts in order, along with supporting evidence and file a complaint with small claims court or whichever court has jurisdiction (small claims courts have dollar limits).

Take him to court, and make sure you have proof, IE IOU or withdrawl slips and reciepts. Chances are good if you have proof.

i'd take him to court, your chances are pretty good. i'd advise you to also look into the process of garnishing his wages if you win.

Take him to court if he won't respond to you. If it's really your money, the judge will see that and make him pay it.

First rule: never loan to boyfriend (as soon he becone an ex)as it ruines a relationship. Now that is done:
Get yourself ready: you must treat him about this matter (if you together or not) very unemotionally: as a stranger who you gave a loan to (in fact worked out inflation % and other lost costs).
GET FACTS:
1. get proof where did you get the money first (bank statement etc)
2. dates (when given him $2000)
3. why (why did he need it: if he had to pay for something, buy something, pay someone, try to get those records), why did he need your money and had none himself
4. anyone as a witness to hear two of you talking about the money? ask them to write a statement
5. all the history, well organised: how many times you asked for it back, how many times you called him in regards of the money (ALL dates..)
6. get a copy of the letter of a demand: I hope he signed that he recieved it, if he did not, send it again with registered post so he SIGNS for it. Give him last 24 hours. Write in there that if he does not return ALL the money (with interest)you will be forced to go to authorities (be VERY clear on it that he UNDERSTANDS this is serious and you mean business) and ask him within the letter the reason why he cant pay now (or maybe he can pay per month till he pays off: give him that option). If he replies, great you will have proof and if he does not reply to your letter with the reasons why he cant pay, he is giving you go ahead (be strict!: you have another proof he ignores you: he could write a letter back that he done not owe you money...)
7. Then go to cops to open the case of theaft (depends what counrty you are in different rules apply) or go to court.

If you are still with him or not, Just be careful, the 'boyfriend' (and someone like that who does not want to give money can be good at it!) can make a story that you demand this money which was actually a 'gift' from you and you demand it back just because he broke up with you etc.. (as a revenge)

SO YOU HAVE A CHANCE IF THE ABOVE IS IN PLACE. GET PREPARED.
