Having been poor and having to eat cheaply here are my suggestions.
Buy all your food at Iceland or Asda. Buy the value brand stuff. Buy things like rice and pasta in bulk. Meat is expensive so if you must eat meat buy chicken legs or stewing steak and make casseroles.
Buy fruit and veg from a local market rather than a supermarket, it's much cheaper. Bulk up stews with dried pulses left to soak overnight.
Don't buy fizzy drinks - buy squash and drink that instead probably better for you as well. Before you go out drink some vodka at home so you don't spend so much when you go out (big student tip there!)
Instead of having chinese and indian take aways go to the local fish and chip shop.
Don't buy bottled water, drink tap water it's fine!
Make loads of meals at the same time and then put them in freezer bags in and take one out at a time and defrost them. It's cheaper to make things in bulk. Good things to make in bulk are: lasagne, bolognese, chilli, stew etc. then all you have to do is boil up some pasta or rice to go with it.
Baked potatoes make a great meal and are cheap. Put them in the oven with some olive oil and salt on them for 2 hours. Great cheap fillings are: cottage cheese, chilli, baked beans, grated cheese, coleslaw.
Chinese and ethnic shops are good places to bulk buy rice, cooking oil etc and are often cheaper than supermarkets. Lidls is also a great place to stock up on basics such as tins of veg and tins of beans. Eggs are cheap and great for you. Buy loads of eggs so you can always have an omelette on toast for tea or breakfast. Hard boiled eggs also make a great sandwich or baked potato filling.
If you work, don't buy lunch when you're there, make a tuna, sweetcorn and mayo pasta salad and bring it with you along with a banana and a packet of crisps and re-use an old water bottle to take some juice with you. It can be done - I've done it! |

My wife and I save money on food all the time. Cook meals that will feed an army. Buy the ingredients on sale, and in bulk. Cook 2 or 3 at a time. Vaccum seal individual portions. Now you have a freezer stocked with several different dinners that will take you a couple of weeks to eat, and cost you a fraction of the normal bill. |

Saving money... OK - set a monthly budget and stick to it. Don't be too mean on yourself otherwise you just won't stick to it! Work out how much you need to save per month to reach your goal savings... You could cut down on bills - phone - electricity etc but just not using stuff so much. Do you have a car - do you need to use it? Could you walk or cycle instead? To save money on food how about buying own brand supermarket stuff - like Tesco Value and buy in bulk. Pasta and bread are filling and cheap - baked beans on toast (I think) is a lovely meal and is go cheap! Remember very little helps. Good luck. |

Those cheap packs of noodles that are about 5p per pack are ace. Get about 50 packs of them, along with some curry powder and sweet chilli sauce.
Boiled sticky rice is good too. When I was student I bought a pack of 50 sausages for £2.50 and ate nothing but them for a week.
Hell, I eat like that even when I'm flush! |

Make a list.
Things you need to pay, like bills, rent, council tax etc. these need paying so no cut backs there
Things you spend money on, ie going out, smoking? anything classed as leisure...this is where you can make most of your savings, really study these things and decide what you can miss out on.
See if you can get better deals on your phone, internet, gas electricity etc (pre payment meters are an option - no lump sum bills each month/quarter for your utilities, like pay as you go)
Don't cut down on your food unless there is something that you buy but end up throwing away, look out for buy one get one free offers in supermarkets, and special offers. A good tip is when you shop, you will find that supermarkets reduce prices dramatically on certain items which are close to their sell by / use by date, if you can make a meal on that same day or freeze the item then it's a good start to the week. But remember to eat well, it's no good thinking I'll buy 3 loaves of value bread and 8 tins of baked beans you'll soon get fed up of it.
Hope this helps. |

the top and bottom of it is you have to make sacrifices. it depends on your income. write down all your income for the next 6 months, then write all of youe ESSENTIAL, UNAVOIDABLE expenditure. do your shopping at netto instead of sainsburys, home and bargain is another good shop. they sell asda and argos stuff for half the price. budget for everything. if you really need to do it then you can. good luck! |

Eating cheaply is easy, cook everything from basic ingredients, therefore, no ready meals, I'm afraid. 5K that's a lot of money, cut your spending to the bone, question each purchase, and only spend what you have to, you'll be surprised what you can save! |

When getting your paid check,do save up to 25% of it before you spend any of it for your living. The best is the more you can save the better, but don't make you life too hard to live on.Try to save on some place that you unable to get it out so easy.Try to cook your own meal at home and bring your own home make lunch if you don't want to spend eating outside.Cut down on your entertainment fees for not going out and pick some cheaper habit such as reading as it will spend most of your time at home. |

yes, first trade in your car for a "moped"... simply add an engine kit to your bike( $200)- ebay sells them and they go 35mph+ (and 150miles per gallon)... then get a roommate or a few roommates to share housing expenses... (then get a aerogrow and grow your own food?).... or hunt your own food... or get the roadkill cookbook -or in normal not so desparate situations get a protein drink and multivitamins and eat basically nothing but oatmeal everyday... throwing in a few random foods here and there to keep it balanced( your body needs various non-pill form nutrients too)... after that ask everyone you pass by for a dollar or more... then buy everything you need from walmart and use the stuff for their use and return it as needed for your next thing needed...and,
actually, just buy your food from publix and eat like 25% and return it... for every meal.( say it wasnt taste good)... then you simply save every bit of money you make at this point for the 5k you need... good job to get also to make money fast is cna and work for agency where you work your own schedule(its like temp service for nurses)... depending on where you live they make $15hr and are extremely in demand right now... they usually pay overtime too and you can actually make over $4000 month.... plus the class for your license is only 2 weeks and$350 total -$250 plus test $150=350....... anyway good luck and live it ghetto to get what you want... |
