Headless Chicken!! | Anyone know anything about a letter to reclaim bank charges? |
I have had various charges applied to my account over the last few years, most of them warranted but for really small things like being overdrawn by £2 and being charged £30 for the privilege. I heard someone discussing it the other day (earwigging!) and wondered what it was all about. Anyone know anything about it?
I am in the U.K. |

Yes, i think it was discussed on Panorama!! I have the law abiding letters that you send to your bank/building society from a friend of mine!! Although i haven't sent them in myself, my friends mum did and she was able to reclaim £3000 in recovered charges... All you have to do is send a £10 cheque to the bank to cover the maximum cost that it would of cost them to send you that silly letter that then charges you £30..other than that it hasn't cos them a penny and im really pleased other people are beginning to find out about this!!!!! |

Just send a polite letter to your bank explaining the situation and say that you would like to stay a customer of theirs but feel their charges are ridiculous and you will be changing providers if they don't refund you. Worth a try, just be nice, they're more willing to help. |

You don't need a £10 cheque, that's if you want to find out about data protection info. I work for a bank, I'm only human and made mistakes and had bank charges. I've not had them refunded. In this country we have free banking as long as we keep within our overdraft, we know what DD's/S/O we've got and we need to make sure the money is there the day before, regardless of the amount we will get charged. I see at least 6 letters a day saying that they are unlawfull etc etc, when we opened the account we know what would happen if we didn't have enough in the account etc etc, I'm worried that if this continued the level in which it is because we are careless, free banking is going to end and that we will be applied to pay a cheque, deposit cash etc etc. What happens to the people who manage every penny they have not been charged- are they going to ask for cash back as compensation for not going overdrawn? The guy who is on telly saying refund your charges has basically put an end to free banking. The banks have a right to charge for mis-use so now thats taken away, how else will they make up this money? Charge for bank accounts perhaps? "Well done Martin! Thanks for letting me get back my £30 charge" Unfortunately my bank account now costs me £10 per month. What do you care? Your in the bahamas now probably........... |

Doesn't matter if you overdrew by $1 or $100. You knew that you had charges if you overdrew your account. If you don't like it then learn manage your money better.
Go to the bank and complain to the manager that you feel that they shouldn't charge you for breaking the rules that you agreed to and if they don't refund your charges you will close your account and go elsewhere. |
