Yes they are legal, but as the others pointed out, many shops won't take them.
If you KNOW yours is 100% legitimate (the person who gave it to you may have given it to you in good faith, but they might have been slipped a fake one), then I'd change it at the bank if that's easy just so you don't have the worry. However, if you take it to the bank and it is fake they will take it off you and that's you £50 down.
If you put yourself in the position of a shop owner. If you were to, say, buy goods worth £40 with a dodgy £50 note, they'd be down the £50 note when the bank refuses it AND the £40 in goods you purchased. So they'd be down by £90. Hence their hesitation about taking it. |

yes they are still legal, although a lot of places dont like accepting them as its a lot of money to lose if it turns out to be a fake. |

Yes they are legal tender. Actually, alittle known fact....all sterling currency is legal tender but you can only insist on using a particular denomination for purchases of a certain amount.
For instance, if you wanted to buy something for 20p using a £20 note, the shop keeper could legally refuse, but not if the purchase was for say £15.00.
TECHNICALLY it is illegal for someone to refuse a £50 note as payment (providing what you are paying for is above the amount that is legal for £50 notes as above) but who is gonna enforce it???? |
