angeljenuk | Are you a saver or a spender? |
Would you consider yourself to be frugal?
If so do you have any tips? What with the credit crunch at the moment and promises of worse to come any and all help is appreciated! I do wish budgeting was taught at school as it is surely such a useful skill to have.
I intend that one of my New Year's Resolutions will be to save more and spend less.
I think that I have been spending too much buying things that I do not actually need.
I intend to set a budget and be strict with myself with regards to sticking to it.
I do view frugality and thrift as virtues akin to modesty, however, up until now I have been too "weak willed" to subscribe to its principles.
So from 1st January 2009 I will be following the advice of Mr Micawber who said;
Annual Income £20. Annual Expenditure £19 19s 6d.
Result = Happiness.
Annual Income £20. Annual Expenditure £20 0s 6d.
Result = Misery. |

I am definitely both. My personal trick is every time i get paid i have an automatic withdrawal of $250 put into my savings account. That way I never see the money at all. It has helped me a WHOLE lot. $250 is how much i can afford to save and still have some spending money for things, and after the bills are paid of course. So you would definitely want to set your own amount. After i have some money in savings I pay off my bills and what money I have left i can do whatever i want with usually shopping, dinner with friends, entertainment but it doesn't bother me too much knowing I am saving money as i go along too. So maybe try setting a certain amount of money in a savings account every payday, be sure to leave yourself some spending money though! |

Very much a saver and have been from the age of 18 and never looked back, If I keep doing what I'm doing right now then there's every chance that I could retire by the time I'm 45 and lead a very comfortable existence. |

In general I'm a saver, but I can be tempted by bargains - which if I don't need them, aren't really bargains at all.

I really paused before answering your question! OK I ADMIT IT, I'M A SPENDER!
Believe me I should not be, and I'll tell you why. Since you are from the UK, I won't used any of the "abbreviations" used in the States when discussing my education and background. I hold the following University degrees, a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, a Master of Arts degree in Finance, a Doctorate in Finance, and a Doctorate in Economics!
Should I be a spender? Well I am, and have been my whole life. When I retired I was the Chief Executive Officer of a large company! I could just never seem to "practice what I teach"!
I wish you luck.
