Are you cutting back on anything to save money in these hard times?
Maybe we can all learn from one another on how to save a few pennies. We've just eaten cauliflower cheese using cauliflowers from our own vegetable garden - but that's about as much effort as we're making.

Know It All
* bringing sandwichs to work (rather than buying lunch)
* Using cheaper make-up, and other toiletries
* buying toiletries when they're on offer - especially in boots - bogof, 342 offers etc - plus I get loads of points!
(I currenttly hva e a cupbaord full of shampoo, showergell, tooth paste etc that I got on offer - so I wont have to buy any for months)
* Not having 2 pints of beer, or 3 glasses of wine after work in the pub most days (i did that most of last year)
* giving up smoking

I worked out a budget and worked out how much I can realisticially afford to spent each week (after rent, direct debtis etc) - I take a lump of cash put every monday morning and thats what has to last me the week, for everything from food to clothes etc. It works well.... If i want to buy something thats more than I have left that week, I have to wait til next week - you have to have a bit of self control.
Also, i used to havea habit of just buying food from tesco every day on my way home from work - i was ending up spending loads.
Now, if I don't have enough cash - I just go home and use the plenty of food that is already in my cupboard - and this mean instead of buying a randompizza or something - I will have enough of my weekly cash to let me go out and have a good time at the weekend.

I have been doing this since the middle of last year
I have already paid off a £5000 graduate loan i had with my bank, and a £2,500 credit card.
I am now debt free.

Even just these simple changes helped me do that!

Also, i refuse to pay for television - I just got a tv that had freeview built into it - it has all the channels I need and more.

Yeah just got rid of Sky movies and sky sports, cos we are always at work and too bloody knackered when we get in from work, so waste really - never watch anything!

Other than that, we have always made sure we live within our means - well done on the cauliflower, my stupid dog would probably pee all over our veg or maul it if I grew anything other than weeds!

Hardly drink any more. Come straight home after work most of the time. Stay home and cook more of my own stuff. Go shopping only when I need things and I use a list. Since I use a cell phone I got rid of my land-line phone. Discontinue three magazine subscriptions. I tried to make all of my outings count by consolidating my running around. Paying bills on-line more, trying to go paperless. Quit going to the Video store, use NetFlix instead. Save money with on-line banks which keeps me for running down the street all the time withdrawing money.

Thats odd, i just had cauliflower cheese from your veg garden too, so we're saving a lot more than u, haha.
seriously, i am not cutting back, im self employed and im working harder and longer to make more money so i can enjoy life.

Dont_taze_me_bro
i ate dog food yeasterday. Glad I'm not a real dog.

Don't use the car for those small journeys. A car will return many more miles to the gallon on a long run than a small run and you never know, you might burn up a few calories at the same time.

Yeah I leave the missus home when I go down the boozer. That's slashed the drink bill by 50%
I've also hidden her car keys during the petrol shortage and that's cut the fuel bills 50%
Once I find her mobile I'll be hiding that as well.

Actually, I started cutting back on stuff over a year ago. I spent the past year paying off my debt and saving up some money. It is actually pretty easy. My first month, I eliminated over $500 in monthly bills. I put all of that towards paying off my student loan. Now the loan is gone and my budget is much better. I have not really missed the stuff I got rid of.

• I eat out less, and usually order fewer drinks (sheesh, booze is expensive!), Shop less, and try to be smart about my groceries. I insist on continuing to buy organic, when I can, and I drink soy milk. But I stock up on frozen fruits and veggies, and that saves me a bundle.
Here are a few more findings:
Equate No Rub contact solution is about $7-$12 less than Opti Free no Rub express.
Clear contacts are $20-$30 less that fresh look colorbleands.
Treseme Shampoo which is about $10-$20 less that Paul Mitchell & BeLong
BedHead hair treatment/conditioner is $10-$20 less than Paul Mitchell, BeLong & Sebastian
Bath & Body Works day face cream is $30-$80 less than EsteLauder, Dior, & Elizabeth Arden
Loreal night cream & Cetaphil body ceam is **$120 less that StriVectrin D, face & body cream

I drive an oversized (to some over priced) SUV, so I buy gas at SamsClub or QT. I travel a lot for work, so if I have to stay in a hotel, I pack a few meals. If I stay with friends or its a day trip for a meeting or conference I just pack whatever I might need for the drive to & from.
I Refil my water bottles (I like them frozen) with a 25cent refilled gallon vs a $10 case of water.
I straighten my hair at home. I invested in a high quality Ceramic hair dryer and good boar bristle brush. I've had them a few years now and they are in tip top shape still.
I discontinued my membership at my local movie Gallery I purchased a $9 a month membership at Netflix. I trade movies with my coworkers sometimes.
I stopped getting my nails done, I invested in a few good nail files and buffers.
If I need perfume I go to a perfume retailer and look at the sale Items in the front. I got my Lacost perfume for $40.
I only dry clean things I absolutely have to (suede and silks, or things with ruffles) any thing else I gentle cycle it or hand wash it, and Iron it with steam under a white pillow sham.
If I need shirts I always shop the sales rack. Notice I said need, sometimes I am clumsy and I get ink on my tops, so I have to get new ones, ink doesn't always come out.
Banana Republic has stupid cheap sales, especially a banana republic outlet and a sale on top of that. It's sickening!
If I need cotton women tees or undershirts I hit up AnchorBlue or Charlote Ruse, their shirts are usually well cut and usually on sale 2 for $20.
I stopped watching info-mercials.

Actually I'm doing pretty well. But I am living well within my means, saving as much as I can if things should turn bad for me. I drive very little taking the bus to and from work. I'm not buying things I don't need so that if things should turn south for me I will not be used to living a lifestyle I cannot sustain.

Have pretty much run out of things to cut back on. I would love to get rid of Sky TV but hubby likes his sport and he is bed ridden most of the time. I bank on line and pay as many bills as possible the same way. Most utilities offer discounts for prompt or on line payment. We have a car, essential because we have no regular transport service, but try to use it only once a week for shopping. We grown a lot of fruit in our garden, but I wish I had time to grow vegetables as well.

Buy anything solar powered if you pay for electric. Solar lights etc.

I'm considering ditching my TV as most programmes are avaiable for later downloading to save on the TV license.

Ditch Sky TV if you don't think it worth the money.

Share a bath.

Shop in all the places that your town provides. Get all the special offers and good deals from ALL the supermarkets.

Claim tax credits if you're entitled. (Thousands dont)

Use a washing line.

Plant your potato peelings, some grow again, they're good for the soil even if they don't

Buy energy saving bulbs unless there's a medical reason why you can't use them.

Get involved in car sharing wherever possible to halve the travelling expenses.

Stale bread makes good toast. Think about all food that you bin, whether you're cooking too much food. Think about your fridge and the things that are about to go off in it and how you can use them up before they do.

Avoid the pub-buy a cheap case of beer and drink at home.

Any bills that are payable at the post office you can buy Post Office Stamps for. Budget properly and avoid late payment charges. (BT, Car Tax etc). (True you would get the interest on the money if it was sitting in your bank - but if it suits you......)

Think about switching suppliers for gas electric, phone etc if its cheaper.

Keep scrap paper by the phone. Anything that you want to phone anyone about, write it down and only use your phone when the calls are free. (Not always possible I know as some only work office hours)

Just made a drink! Don't boil more water than necessary. Not only does it cost more, the next time you boil it there'll be less oxygen in it and it won't be as good for you!

Not really, I have a decent job, I constantly save and invest so that if there are any lean times I will be fine.

The economy will always have up's & down's. It is pertinent that everyone save and be responsible.

If the government dramatically cut taxes, cut spending, end all subsidies, reform the tax code to a flat tax or consumption tax and cut regulations the economy would be booming beyond our wildest dreams.
