try calling them on the phone (see if you can find a number on the internet or something or if it's on your credit report.) If you can't close it over the phone then send the letter. THey should be able to give you your account number, that way you won't have to risk sending something with your SSN in the mail.

hi,
no, don't include your full ss number, just the last 4 numbers and the account number. good luck!

No. You should be able to verify the account information without divulging your social security # in a letter. Contact the creditor directly.

You should only put the last 4 numbers, and that is it. They should know the first part of your social security # if they handled your account.

I don't like to do that either but I think they will ask for it .

Nooooo. absolutely not. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the North America, and that letter may get intercepted. Call an attorney, for advice.
I got hit with ID theft, and it is no picnic.

It's not necessary. Be sure to include your full name, date of birth, address and telephone number. Also, in your letter, be sure to ask them specifically to report that the account was closed by YOU. If it doesn't say that in the report, some potential creditors can take it as a negative.

Try to contact this company first and ask them what all is needed from you to close the account,,Dont include your personall information in the letter unless they ask for it...

Just call them. Tell them to send you a statment that shows the account has been closed

yes ... these days, I would try to submit the letter using the last 4 of your ss ... if they want more, they will contact you.

I wouldn't your account number should be enough... also make sure your account hasn't been transferred to another debt collecting agency... in that case you may be sending the check to the wrong company. If possible talk with someone from the debt collection agency... I would also ask them what all you need to enclose. Good luck!

catielovesjesus
You don't need your SSN on your letter, just an account number. If they require a SSN, they will contact you.

BUT - You might want to reconsider closing the account. Even though you don't use it, it has shows length of (good) credit. How long you've had (good) credit is one determinate of your credit score. So, unless you've got other accounts that are just as old, reconsider. Having this account on your record will not hurt you, but closing it might.

It's not a good idea to include your social security, if they really need it, include your phone number and they can ask you over the phone!
