That's highway robbery. Complain, talk to your bank manager and make an official complaint - immediately. Don't hang around. These banks are a complete RIP OFF in the UK. It's time to stand up to them. Tell them that you'll report them to the banking ombudsman if they don't 'refund' immediately. I would. |

First visit your bank (in person). Ask to speak with someone about a problem with your account, explain what has happened and tell them why you are unable to pay their charge. The charge will probably be cancelled. If you get no luck visit the citizens advice bureaux and see if they can intervene on your behalf.
Once the matter has been settled ensure that you always have a positive balance in your account. Build it up each week so that you have a safety net against this type of problem. Life is so much easier if you have a little cash stored away. |

You should go to the trading standards office and complain. Then make an appointment with a bank manager at your bank and put the facts before them. They are more likely to reimburse you if you are face to face.
The banks in the UK are very sensitive to this issue at the ,moment as they have been taken to court over unfair charges numerous times recently. You may be young now but as you salary grows they will be happy to keep you sweet. Just threaten to move your account...i would be happy to advise as I have just done so.

PS if you tell me the bank I would be happy to talk to them and get them to see reason....it is an absolute outrage!!!!! |

Most bank workers believe that the public has no knowledge of banking what-so-ever. Most times, they misbehave.
On whose authority is £5 a day being charged?
First, meet the Manager in person. He may not be aware of the wrong doings. There-after, write the Inspection department, Head Office of the bank with copies of your statements.
Don't deal with the bank anymore for the time being. If they don't yield, employ a lawyer to take the bank as a corporate body to court.
Carry the matter to the Bankers Association and let both electronic and print medias air the news to soil the name of the bank and their staff |

Punitive charges are illegal - they can charge you for the letter, and they can charge as much interest as they want on an overdraft that wasn't arranged - but they can't just charge you £5 per day.
But, to cut a long story short, you need to put the cash into the bank as soon as possible or the interest charges will quickly wrack up. |

i had the same problem and racked up about £200 in bank charges. once you can transfer some money into the account to clear the debt, if you ask them they will waive the charges, that's what happened with mine (barclays). good luck. |

I wonder if they can still charge u 5 a day if the account is closed. It would be a hassle but you may be better off closing the account and going to a new bank. Also borrowing money from friends or your boss isnt fun but in this case I would try to. |

Go to the bank in person - it's better to talk to someone face to face, most banks these days have call centres which are far too impersonal - beg and plead if you have to - good luck

You can find out how to reclaim your bank charges for the last 6 years from moneysavingexpert - http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/bank-charges
Alternatively, I would try contacting your bank again and being a bit firmer with them. If you have never been overdrawn with them before and have been a long-term customer, then they might take this into account.
Try ringing them again - and this time ask to speak to the manager. |

It is possible to submit a claim for bank charges going back six years.
You can do this yourself and is not too difficult or if you prefer you can pay a small percentage of the money you get returned for dealing with the claim on your behalf then you can use one of the no win no fee companies.
Take a look at bankrebate.com and chargerefund.com
If you have paid any payment protection insurance over the last six years there is a good chance that you may be able to reclaim that. Try 1ppi.co.uk
They also deal with unfair credit agreements, it would appear that up to 50% of credit agreements maybe unenforceable and in a lot of case the loans are squashed enabling the person who took out the loan to keep the money or goods. |

I believe what you need in the future is ,an agreed overdraft facility. Which allows you to go overdrawn without charges, provided you don't over the agreed amount.
Check with your bank. |
