Sunshine Girl | Bank Mistake? |
I wrote a check for my rent which is $700.00 on October 1. My bank only deducted $70.00 out of my account instead of the $700.00. My boyfriend suggests taking my money out of the account and going elsewhere before they notice. I'm not sure that I want to belong to a bank that's made such a huge mistake. What would you do? |

Your landlord is going to notice when he balances his bank statement. If he has no joy at the bank he will come knocking on your door (perhaps literally). Do not do as your boyfriend suggests. It isn't going to work. |

How would you feel if the situation was reversed?
You only got credit for $70 of a $700 paycheck???
You can't ever feel bad about doing the right thing - so do it. |

If they only deducted 70.00 it means that your landlord probably only GOT 70.00.
DO NOT take the money out-- they coudl electronicaly fix it and overdraft you. Dont ever try and cheat the system-- you'll just get screwed. |

You might want to check with the bank. Chances is you might have made a mistake with your check. It's better to notify them as they will find it sooner or later. Don't get into trouble when the problem was not created by you in the first place.

Contact your bank. Depending on your bank's policy and procedures, they will either process an encoding error adjustment on your account or they will just ask you to issue another check to your landlord for the difference.
If they decide to process the encoding error on your behalf, they will adjust your account to have the check cleared for the correct amount of $700. What this means is that your bank will correct your account and then they will send the adjustment to your landlord's bank.
Just don't use the money in your account. If your bank is going to do the encoding error adjustment, they will need to have the funds in your account to do so. If you take the money out, they may put a freeze on your account. It won't be worth it in the long run to mess up your relationship with your bank.
Hope this information helps. Good luck! |

these kinds of proof errors are common no matter what bank you go to. it's called a "slide." call the bank and tell them what happened. they'll fix it. also, in the future, when you write your checks, make sure they are neat and legible...not like the pen exploded on the page (not saying yours look like that!). that will help the proof machines pick up the correct images. also, please keep in mind that the checks are going through proof around 11 pm-2am and these proof operators are probably a little sleepy. |

Don't screw around with the bank. They will know, your landlord will know. It's not worth the police knocking on your door or your landlord, throwing you out on the street.
Practice good karma. |

Doing what your boyfriend suggests is fraud and the penality can be jail time |

not a problem if you withdraw the money, but that will cause a very big problem when your landlord comes to know about it.
If you have an overdraft, then your account will go in debit and that will cause you to pay a hefty interest. And believe me you will be in deep **** if that happen...because to save some extra money you will have to pay unnecessary interest. |

Ask your landlord to check that he got a $700 deposit. That will eliminate any problems on that end. It is likely your landlord's bank's fault.
It will catch up to you eventually. Just fix it. If it was your bank's fault, I would find another bank. |

Even though the extra $$$ would be great, you need to call both your bank and landlord. |
