XXGuitarXplayaX | Bank account and credit card at 17? |
My friend is 17 years old and he just got a job at Baskin Robins. He got his first paycheck and cashed it at a check cashing place. Can he take his next paycheck to the bank and get a account. He wants to buy a laptop and make payments but for that he needs a credit card. Will he recieve one. His mom won't do it for him so he needs his own and also will his mom have acess to his account |

of course he can, if he is older than 16 he can have his own checking and savings account, and its also free if he is student... i think he should go to Bank of America ... and he only needs is some photo ID and social, thats it....
for the credit card thing, is he can get a student credit card, its that easy.
Good Luck |

Uh huh, go on I'm listening
 |
I doubt he'll be able to get a CC till he's 18.
But yes he can open a bank account now. |

he can get his bank account but not the credit card. You have to be 21 to be eligible for the card itself and at least 18 to own a supp card |

When I was 17, I had an account through my Mom with only my name on it. I'm not sure if she could access the account or not....she wouldn't ahve, though. They have student accounts. I'm not sure if it's just for college students or not. If someone at 17 can drive and work....I would think they should be able to have a bank account....hopefully. Credit cards you have to be 18, though. Also, so he doesn't get charged a fee, he can cash his checks at whatever bank his job uses. He may even be able to open up an account there, and possibly get direct deposit and free checking since it's through his work. Good luck to him. |

If you have a Unity One Federal credit union he can get a credit card there as long as he opens a savings account |

im pretty sure you have to be 18 to have a credit card, but if he wants his money in the bank he can get a student-checking account which is free and he can deposit his checks into the account either by signing with baskin robins that he wants them directly deposited or he can take them to the bank himself, he will get a check book as well as a debit card, however with a debit card it takes the money straight from your account so you cant have monthly payments, so he would have to save the money up until he has enough money in his account to pay for the computer |

Yes, he can open a banking account. He will probably need to make it a savings account and not a checking, since checking often needs a cosigner. He can't get a credit card unless he's an emancipated minor. Once he turns 18 he can get one, and if he doesn't want her to then his mom will have no access to his account |

He'll need to go to a bank and talk to an account representative about what he'll need to open an account and requirements for parent names on the account. Each state differs a little bit. He may want to call ahead and ask, some banks won't open accounts (without parents) for teens under 19. |

mother will not have access to account, unless she is co-signing. Anyone can open a bank account. I got my first credit card when I went to college, they offered me a student credit card. I don't uderstand why they would want a credit card for him to be able to purchase a laptop though... that sounds weird. |

first, have him stop cashing his paycheck at a check cashing place. Those places are only there to rip you off. He should take his paycheck and open an account at a bank. Then he could write a check or get money out for FREE! I'd stay away from credit cards. "The borrower becomes the lender's slave" in the book of proverbs. He should save up money and pay cash for the computer. Some places offer 90 days same as cash, but if he is ever late or misses a payment, he'll be charged a lot of interest and it will effect his credit rating. |
