I hate chase bank. They wouldn't give me my money and I was complaining and then my dad gave me a lecture and told me that that's how the world works and if I don't like it, then I should be putting my money in a mattress.... I'm thinking the mattress sounds like a good idea.

Try becoming a member of a credit union sometimes they arent as bad.

I am a credit union member, and have been for years. The wonderful thing is that if I accidently overdraw, they charge me 2 bucks rather than the 30 bucks I hear happens with some banks. I had a very unpleasant experience with Washington Mutual, and I know from my roommate's experience that she got charged a lot more fees than I did for the same thing...

I've been with Washington Mutual for 7 years, and have never even paid $1 in bank charges.

Change banks.

You have to pick your bank carefully and manage your accounts carefully. I never pay any fees.

Not sure why you are paying fees, the only fee I know it will incurr is if you are NOT carefully and overdawn your accoung. I never pay a fee on my checking account and get free checks.

Probably not a bad idea even if there were no charges

Here in the US, retail banking is very regionalized. Customers in New York City put up with paying for things that we out west would never stand for. I personally have multiple accounts at different banks here in California, and get good service, free checks, reimbursed ATM fees, free cashier's checks and wiring, and even a piece of Corningware when I opened my account.

The differences are based in the supply and demand of banking services, the cost of doing business in any particular region, and state banking laws.

To answer your question, it would be nice to go bankless, especially now that interest rates are low and you're not getting any great payment for trusting them with your cash. However, what do you do when someone writes you a check?

try wamu they have free checking and savings i've been there for a year and have had no problems

I don't pay any fees. All you have to do is follow the rules -- keep the required minimum in your account(s) (if necessary), don't overdraw your account, use ATM's in your bank's network, etc.

By the way, a lot of banks will give you free checking if you direct deposit your paycheck into your account at their bank.

Since I live in one of the most crime infested cities in American I'll take my chances with the bank. Actually I use a credit union.

Banks do not charge anything on savings a/c dude. Or do you mean they should not be charging you any thing for loans, overdrafts, cashiers checks and all the the other things people like you expect?

But if you want to put your money under your mattress, or to cut your nose to spite your face, go ahead. Banks are idiots to do so many things for us free of charge. Why are they not charging $100 a year on all check accounts for a start?

I paid good money for my bank shares and am expect rising dividends every year.
