Best thing to do with Money?
I got a raise of pay, feel intimidated to spend unwisely, what do i do?

Depends on what is going on with your financial picture.

These are the questions I would ask and complete each one in order.
1. Do you have at least $1000 in savings for emergencies? If yes, continue to 2.
2. Are you in debt (car, credit cards, home equity loan, (not first mortgage)? Then pay down debt if no debt, go to 3.
3. Do you have 3-6 months of living expenses in the savings account? If no, save for that, if yes, continue.
4. 15% into your retirement funds, start with ROTH IRA.
5. Fund kids college (if you have kids).
6. Pay off home
7. Give money away to your favorite charities and save more for retirement.

For more details on the above, read The Total Money Makeover by Ramsey. It has changed our outlook on finances.

put the extra money that you will be paid each month into a savings account or if you have debts pay them off with it.

treat yourself to something nice as a reward, then save some

Put all of the raise into a retirement account (IRA, stock savings, etc).

You won't notice any change in your paycheck and just live as you have been living.

Spend it wisely and responsibly. If it's not enough to buy what you want/need, save it.

Use the extra money & put it into a savings account u wasnt used to having it there & saving it may mean it will come in handy at a later date

RIGGS
spend it...cos it aint no good to you when youre dead?

Some ideas:

-Save it in an online savings account. HSBC and ING Direct are well-known and offer relatively high rates, and the money will be relatively liquid.

-Invest it in the CDs, stocks, mutual funds, bonds, etc.

-Donate to a charity.

One more thing - word of the wise says not to increase your standard of living just because your pay was increased. If your living situation is fine right now, then maintain your living standard and don't up it just because of an increase in salary.

SALSA
Invest some in different places. One place where you can make more by risk taking and another solid secure investment. Talk with a bank or credit union counselor.

You could put the extra money into a savings/investment account, your pay cheques stay the same as they were before the pay increase so no need for any change to your normal spending habits.

If you decide to save, ISA's are pretty good because they are tax free, however, how you invest and where to invest is based on your circumstances and you should probably shop around or speak to an advisor.

Alternatively, (this is the boring bit) you could use the money sensibly and look at your protection needs e.g. income protection, term assurance etc. These can really be worth the effort for most people.
