Bounced check?
this is the first check i have ever bounced and i don't know what will happen. i sent in the mail my rent check for the month of july and it did not go through, do to careless checkbook-keeping on my part. my landlord is through a realtor, and i do not remember what they said about bounced checks when i signed the lease. what do you suppose would happen? can i just send them another check or do i have to come up with another method of payment? i have the money now, so a check now would not be a problem. i feel so horrible...but of course, these things happen right? :-/

These things happen to most of us at one point or another. The important thing is you have the money now to pay your landlord. If you can pay him the cash so they don't have to wait any longer. But get a receipt. They will probably also charge you for the NSF cheque. If this is the first time, they probably will allow you to pay by cheque still. In the future call them before hand to let them know to hold the cheque afew days before they deposit it. Or even put a stop payment on the cheque. Most landlords don't have a problem if you are running short once in awhile as long as you let them know before hand.

Are you going to be delinquent for the month? Either way, call them and apologize and explain to them what happened, show your good will and I'm sure they'll be understanding, its not like you're asking for more time to pay, you have the money. If the Realtor feels like you've been a bad tenant tho, he/she may just be an *** about it and force you to pay a late fee, but a happy tenant=un-problematic house.

usually if you call them right away and let them know you made an error they will be understanding then you can give them the option of putting the check back through or accepting another method of payment.

Just call and explain. Then take them cash. You might have to pay a late charge or bank fee but that should be the worst of it.

gloglo
yes, it does, well u if the check was to be change with the person itself the bank will only say no money available. but hey try the next time write down payments done and other transacions

askmike
dont worry.. you will however have to pay your rent with probably a money order for a while and make sure you pay the bad check in a timely manner. yes you will need to take a money order or cash.

Golden
run down to the office with some cash. people like cash, they'll forgive you.

Call your landlord and explain what happened. Tell him you're sorry and you will try not to let it happen again. Ask if he wants you to send another check or use anothe method of payment, ex. a money order. Hopefully this will smooth things over.

you will have to pay over charges plus the check ..you will be ok

Call them first thing tomorrow, and apologize. Explain that it was a total oversight on your part and ask if they would prefer to re-run your check or for you to write another one or perhaps pay with cash or a money order. Most people are understanding if you contact them. If you don't communicate they may assume you are a deadbeat and will be harder on you. You will still probably have to pay fees, etc. It happens to the best of us - just be honest and follow up.

the bank is going to get about $30.00 in blood money and your landlord may or may not ask for it -you can ask them to resubmit check or just bring another but do not send one as this conveys a lack of a sense of urgencey on your part, inquire about OVERDRAFT PROTECTION at yourbank ASAP ,it is cheap insurance

CycloneSteve
The key is to contact your bank and the landlord.

If the check was cashed and bounced you will get hit with a fine from the bank and probably your landlord. It's usually $10 to $40 from each one. Most of the time a check can be presented twice so if you have the funds now, you can tell them to re-present it.

As I said, you need to talk. Call the bank and find out if the check bounced and what the fee is. Call the landlord and ask them what they want you to do. Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to contact someone who owes you money.

Truthfully, my dear person, I am assuming that you don't balance your checkbook nor do you commit to doing a bank reconciliation each time your statement is published. You really should balance your checkbook and do the bank reconciliation (check your checkbook registry against your bank statement). Please call the landlord and explain the fallacy on your part than commit to a sincere and utmost apology to them. Send them another check if you have the funds to cover it. After all, most landlords do not accept cash payments. It's cheques or money orders. And yes these things do happen occassionally, but please don't make a habit of it...it can ruin your credibility and in rare instances can trash your credit.
