British Gas are rubbish at customer service. I know from experience in trying to contact their not-so-helpful help lines.
Go to your citizens advice bureau.... they can give free legal advice and may contact British Gas on your behalf.... that may have more impact on your complaint if they arent listening to you. |

i work for metering services, which are employed by british gas to read the meters, i can only sympathise with you here, i have met hundreds if not thousands of upset customers. Some of these are single mothers on benifits, which breaks my heart, unfortunatly british gas are not breaking any laws by putting this charge on your meter. because the price of gas and electric went up a while ago, and you have had your meter installed some time ofter that price inflation you have to pay the new rate starting from when they annouced it. because they cannot install the new meters fast enough for evreyone to start the new rates at the same time, so you have a debt which you never even knew about until you noticed the meter eating your credit, not only that i think you are paying for the meter/instsaltion also. |

A lot of the power companies have been doing this recently. Basically, it isn't your fault that they took so long to update your meter, so why should you pay the increased rate?
This article is quite interesting, and shows how some of the other "big six" are now being nicer to people like you:

Whilst you are doing all of the previous things, which seem to cover what you can do about what has happened. You should also try going to a comparison web site and there you will find out where you can get a much better deal in the future. Grittish Bas are renowned for bad customer service, but more to the point they are the dearest supplier in the country. |

Offwatt will help,
But as you are in financial difficulty anyhow try your local Citizens Advice Bureau - they have qualified solicitor who can tell you your legal position.
Also failing that go and see a solicitor, you can get legal aid, so it won't cost you and they will tell you how you stand.
Good luck! |

What pete said is right change to a different company and when you get letters from British gas asking for their money offer them a pound a week even if they say that they will take you to court stick with it cause an offer of payment would not be turned down in a court taking into account what you are getting in even try 2 pound a month British Gas what a joke they are. I live on my own and was paying 40 pound a month then they wanted 88 pound no chance so I changed |

im with them but i have a 2 bed flat and i only put £10 every 3 weeks which covers me fine . but i would argue the point that its there mistke and not yours and if they turned up in the first place u wouldnt have this bill tell them to shove it and go to cab as they will help u . hope u sort this out |

I think you need to get to your local CAB ASAP. British Gas are little better than legalised thugs and loan sharks, and their customer service is non-existent. Have you noticed that they no longer do the advert about "every xxx mins someone comes home to British Gas"? That's cos everyone's run away. If you have made an agreement with them they can't then change it unless they have a court order. DON'T LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THEIR RUBBISH! And as soon as you can, move to another supplier. If enough people do that, they'd be where they deserve to be...out of business! |
