putting it all on paper makes it clearer..
write down ALL of your income (monthly), and deduct your taxes or whatnot (so that it is what you actually have in-hand every month.
write down every single expense you have monthly.. kid's school expenses, rent/mortgage, car stuff, insurance, food, clothes, utilities, internet, even credit card payments literally EVERYthing. add it all up, and compare it to your budget/analyze it.
now, take a look at your second list and see what you can cut out. for example, perhaps you don't need that caller ID for 6 dollars a month. maybe you don't need aol for 15 bucks, as you can get it for free. perhaps you can find a cheaper cable deal, or negotiate with your credit card companies for a lower interest rate. if you eat out 2, 3 times a week, cut back to 0 or 1 time a week. if you buy brand name stuff, don't. use coupons (they save SO so soo much money), but only buy what you NEED. don't just get something because its a good deal. cut little corners from all parts of life, and you'll have at least 100-200 dollars a month extra. it really works. Also, if you consume alcohol or smoke, not only is it bad for your health, but it just eats up money. it can literally save you so much money if you just dont buy that stuff.. anywhere from 25, 50 bucks to hundreds of dollars a month. also, you can use many home remedies instead of expensive stuff.. for example, all you need in place of a silver jewelry cleaner is salt, baking soda and a piece of aluminium foil (which we get for a STEAL at the 99 cent store!:o).. you dont need expensive cleaners for your bathroom, just use vinegar and water, or baking soda for the pipes/tub. there are a lot of corner you can cut if you just do a bit of digging, like in (used) books or online. good luck! :o) it's great to save money, and not really lose out on anything! |

* Always write a shopping list and stick to it
* Save all coupons and vouchers and use appropriately
* Use the internet to really research big purchases such as tv's insurance etc
* Day to day - buy with cash so I'm aware how much I'm spending
* Go without!
* Sign up to 'reward schemes' so that I get good value

Open an account specifically for the money you are saving.
Designate two tins in your house and every evening empty your purse or pockets, put copper coins in one tin, and silver coins in the other. Just in case there is quite a lot of change in your purse, count it all, if for instance there is £5.85, keep the £5 in your purse, but remove the excess 85p to your silver coins tin, do this every night. This is additional to any other ways you have of saving, like taking directly from your salary etc. Once tins are heavy count up the change and put that into the account also. This 'saving' somethng EVERY DAY though it may sound stupid really helps, and when its the smaller part of the overall amount you really will not miss it.
I have heard once interest is calculated and awarded to the savings account, remove this from the account, take half for yourself as a reward for doing all you have done, and just blow it on whatever you want (within reason), and GIVE away the other half of the interest. Dont worry this amount will come back to you, you will find your 'nightly' purse cleaning will yield more than you thought..........................Or so I am told, I have only got as far as the tins part and seperating money daily, did open the account, did bag the change up and put it in the account, will...............split the interest when its calculated, but my account is quite new at the moment. Good Luck. |

budgeting is very hard but a couple of simple rules don't buy what you don't really need i,e substitue crisps biscuits and sweets for fruit it will last longer, try white seedless grapes instead of the above it's cheaper in the long run as biscuits etc go very quick and often have to replenished more often, also if you use tesco's,sainsbury's asda or similar don't buy brand names their own brand is just as good and cheaper often you are paying upto 20% for the label the contents are the same this is a mistake i have made,i also use netto's,aldi's and lidl's it's nothing to be a shamed of in fact my boss took the pee because i use the cheapo shops but did i care because he was in farmfoods cheapo shop doing the same as me shopping for bargains, also stuff branded item of clothing and habidashery and try asda the george name is very much quality clothing as is matalan or the market,i also buy good quality goods from charity shops but never underwear or socks you only have to wash jumpers, shirts, blouses etc and you can get brand names there for pennies, don't live up to the jones of the world but live for you and your family what you wear is not who you are it's who you are beneath those cloths that is important, also 75% of brand name stuff you buy is the same make as the cheapo stuff and made by the same people why pay the 20% extra for a paper label or tag |

I think an ING savings account is a good option. Don't carry an ATM card with you; this will make your account a little less easy to access, & therefore, less easy to spend!
http://home.ingdirect.com/
When I need a household item or furniture, & it doesn't matter to me if it's used, I see if I can find it through my local Freecycle. Also try shopping at thrift stores & garage sales.
http://www.freecycle.org/
I keep a written record of all income & expenses, which I learned to do from Christian author Mary Hunt.
http://www.debtproofliving.com/
This has helped more than I can say. If you do nothing else, start tracking your money. It has made a big difference for us.
I use simple household items for a lot of my cleaning now. Get a library book on green cleaning & learn how to use baking soda, white vinegar, salt, borax, washing soda, club soda, etc. Saves a lot of money & it's healthier for your household.
Even if you're not interested in using only nontoxic products, you can find library books that will give you recipes to make your own cleaners (window cleaner using ammonia, for example). Lots cheaper.
Or bleach: just use 1 part bleach to 10 parts water for disinfecting counters (but not on marble). Or a 50/50 solution for killing mold. Why pay more for a premixed bleach sanitizing solution when it's so easy to make your own? |

keep a spending diary for a month or two, write down every penny you spend, and I mean every penny. you will be able to assess what you are spending the money on and see what is necessary and what isn't. |

Some things that paid off for me.
1.Pay your self first and make it automatic. There is always something calling for you to spend money so at the end of the month everyone gets paid but you. Have money taken from your paycheck or checking account and put into savings/investments. When you get a raise increase the amount of automatic savings a little. Start small if you must but start.
2.There are necessities and what we think of as necessities. We often treat ourselves with purchases of "little things" e.g. a latte or getting our nails done. Or when we buy things we add a little extra e.g. a moon roof or some upgrade package. It helps me to think of "little" treats as what the cost is per year or for 10 years. A $3.00 latte each work day is $15 per week, more than $60 a month, more than $ 720 per year and more than $ 7,200 in ten years. Maybe just a latte on Monday to start the week and put $40 or $50 a month to savings (or better a 401k). I spend a lot on eating out. Maybe cut down on the frequency or don't add dessert or drinks. Live below your means not above it. People are living on 20% less than you earn.
3. Watch out for fees and debt. Paying things on time is a losing game. Banks and credit card companies kill you with fees and banks pay you almost nothing. Try to stay out of debt except for a mortage. When you have it pay it down quickly not just the minimum.
4. Invest. You will never prosper by "savings" and playing it ultra safe. Have a few month's expenses in savings but you need to invest to get ahead of the game. Not speculate or gamble- well diversified mutual funds.
5. Stay healthy and keep any health insurance you have. One illness can wipe you out. |

leave it in the bank and don't spend anything of what you don't need, only by the essential things that you do need. |
