Cable bill in dad's name he died. Now the cable company wants a death certificate before shut off?
Can they do this. We are moving and want to shut off cable before we go. I told them to leave it on if they have to and bill the dead man. I don't feel as though I should have to give them a death certificate to shut off. Can they make us pay for future billing.

They can't bill you. It's not your debt. You notified them. That's it. If they want to keep it on and let the new inhabitants have free cable, it's on them. You don't have to do anything further.

Oh Boy!
I think the point is that they're not going to let someone other than the named subscriber shut off the cable. This makes a lot of sense because then shutting off someone else's cable would just become an easy, aggravating prank.

Think of how many ex-husbands and ex-wives would shut off the other's cable in the middle of a nasty divorce; how many kids would shut off the cable of that teacher everyone hates?

I'm sorry about your father's passing.

I just went through the same thing. Is this not the most asinine thing ever? My father's phone service was on for nearly three months after he died. There is no reasoning with these people, they have their rules and they will not do anything without the death certificate. Under normal circumstances you should have the death certificate in 2-3 weeks.

That is weird! When my mother died, they just shut it off, no problem. Why don't you have some man call them (tell him the stuff they need to know like SS# and mother's maiden name, account #, etc.) have him claim to be your dead dad and say he just doesn't want service any more?

dEPENDS ON WHAT STATE YOU ARE IN They can however go after the homeowner for this.

Just provide the death certificate. If not that bill will get passed on to your mother, if she's still alive.

Although inconvenient, it's also to protect the customers. You wouldn't want someone who got annoyed with you calling the cable company and having your service shut off, so if the person who the account belongs to isn't available I can understand the company wanting proof they aren't "available" to request termination of service themselves.

Look at it from both sides. Yeah, it's an inconvenience to you especially during a rough time, but if someone was trying to be mean and cause you some hassle, wouldn't you want the cable (or water, or power, or phone, etc) company to require more than name and account # to end or change your service?

It reminds me of so many businesses not requiring ID to use credit or debit cards. I NEVER get angry when asked to show proof of ID because I'd rather have that small inconvenience, than accidentally drop my card and have someone clean me out in a few hours because none of the businesses they visited asked that person for ID to use the card.

Try not to get upset at companies that are trying to protect you...and in doing so, their own business.

Just a different point of view. ☺

If you want it shut off then just try calling and say, "I'd like to have my cable disconnected." They'll ask for your account number or address or something like that. Don't mention that your dad died and that it's in his name. Just say you want to have it disconnected.

lyger1970
If you have another way of proving death of the subscriber that will work too. The usually need a death cert to legally turn off cable. You won't be charged for the trip, if you schedule an appointment for shut off and show the cert then.

The company probably has a contract with your father that allows them to debit the billing amount from his bank account. Even if you close down your fathers' bank account, the company has the legal authority to charge you father for a service you don't use anymore. If your father left a will, the company can sue the person named in his will. Sending a copy of a death certificate would dissolve the contract between the cable company and your father.
Send them a copy of your father's death certificate in the mail. Make sure that the death certificate is signed by a government authority to certify that the death certificate is genuine. Perhaps the police, justice of the peace, a lawyer, etc. This service is free of charge.

They are trying to extort money from his estate from you. If he had no money leave and leave the cable on as they cannot collect from a dead man with no money. However if he left the family anything, then send them a copy or they will attach the estate in court for money. These companies are all operating as extortionists. Get them the copy they want by email today if they have a chance of attaching estate for money. Same for utilities and phone. etc, they have found this way to extort money from survivors to contribute to their billion dollar pensions.

Report them and complain vigorously. They do not have a contract for life with any person. It's totally absurd.
