Call Centres set up in india.. what do you think of them?
Are you happy with the service you get from the Indian call centres? What about other concerns such as security of your personal financial information..After watching this programme on Channel 4 about Call centres in India I think the sensitive financial information of all individuals are in great danger.. All the high street banks, insurers, mobile phone companies who took their call centres (outsourced..in their language) to India to cut costs should take their customers privacy rights more seriously and look into ways of bringing back the lost trust. What are your ideas?

It's a joke...yet more foreigners, being allowed to have a connection with the UK, and abusing it.

I changed to Natwest, because they guarantee no overseas call centres. I'm changing phone contract from Orange as soon as I can, because I can never get through, and when I do, I'm faced with someone called "John", who can't speak English, and then hang's up on me after 3 minutes if he's not sorted my query out, because he's obviously scared of not sticking to his quality control guidelines.

My father actually runs an outsourcing company, and sadly this new little "trend" is getting bigger. It's so cheap for a company to employ a full indian call centre, so that's why it's attractive to them. Customer satisfaction means nothing to them obviously, which is why they're continuing to go for this cheap and nasty option. Ironically, my father was actually in charge of the transfer of the call centre I used to work in, which is a very well known private health care operator. It wasn't working out, so they didn't allow them to handle calls...just process claims, which as you can imagine, hasn't gone very smoothly, but the company signs a very long agreement with the indian call centre, so it's very hard to change things once they've made that decision.

2 things that annoy me is that they call me by my surname instead of my first name... or call me Mr Paul!

Second thing I find difficult is that although some speak the language very well, they do not understand the little phrases and comments that are used in the english language to form part of a conversation. Can't think of an example, but the conversations are always very difficult. (I work for a company that has outsourced internal departments and speak quite frequently to them)

nothing against the people themselves, just find the situations / culture difficult.

Hey... Don't get me started!!

They drive me mad!!

Nowadays, if I'm arranging any kind of insurance etc., I always ask them if their call centres are UK based. If they say no, I just hang up!

My husband is the best when he has no alternative but to speak to any overseas call centres, he speeds up his speech so that they have absolutely no way of knowing what he's talking about!

I guess you have to be there, but when you're sat there listening to it - it's hilarious!!

I know it's naughty, but if you don't laugh, you'll cry!!

Sorry, but I didn't see the Channel 4 programme, but from what you say, it sounds worrying.

I think we should all vote with our feet and give the companies who 'out source' the heave ho!

No. In a word. I recently took a trip to Canada via Chicago O'Hare with United Airlines...I had less than an hour to recheck my luggage through customs due to the tight security situation at the moment...needless to say it did not arrive in Canada...annoying enough..

Yet the most irritating thing was United Customer Services...do they have a complaint section for the complaints section?? and if so can they SPEAK ENGLISH...I am British and did not realise US Indian call centres also existed!! I am not at all raceist, my mother's father was half Indian, yet the mixture of accents was impossible to understand over the phone and the lack of information to find out 'yes' or 'no' if my luggage was or would be there was worse. The chap kept mixing his tenses and repeating strange phrases like 'modom de posibilidy of yur luggage potentially returning to the assigned airport is possibly potential in a number of hours' WHAT? was he reading some strange script?? Why we are pushed from pillar to post by these companies...is there anyone except the Indian Call Centres who are happy with this set up?? It's all bottom line, my company is based on one to one help to find property in spain, if we behaved like this we'd never survive let alone be as successfully recommended to other clients as we are....arghhh

I think there are 2 main problems with call centres in India, the security problems and the fact that they often cant understand what you are actually asking for. I used to work in a call centre for a leading UK bank and we were given extensive training and there were extremely tight security procedures to follow so depending on who you bank with you may have more worries.

Don't like to deal with any call centres really. Staffed with people who aren't genuine experts in their organisation. That said, I rang a certain computer dealer today, ready to give a tirade. The guy listened and was sympathetic (no this isn't an advert) and then offered to send me all sorts of stuff to sort out my problem. Dutch bloke. Completely threw me..

I can't understand a word the people say, but I don't like the idea of other countries knowing my info.

It's against the data protection act and those responsible should be punished.

I hate them! They never totally and fully understand the issue I am calling about, and sometimes I don' t understand what they are saying!

There was an instance where I had to call a certain credit card company several times and never had my issue resolved. I finally asked a girl (who was in India), where was she and these other people working at. She said she was working out of her HOME! The company linked up to these people's homes so they could work. Not a luxury we receive here in the U.S.

I finally demanded to speak to someone who works in AMERICA, no exceptions, and guess what? They transferred me to the company the States.

y pay £5.35 a hour when u can pay £100 a month.i cant understand a word they say .u offer them a £1000 pounds and c how much personal info u could get .the meat has gone from this country all whats left is the bones

Like all Call Centres - diabolical abuse of power moving responsibility for a company's failings further from those who make the decisions.

Marc
I think that, even disregarding the issue of security which obviously is a concern, the service from call centres based in India is never as good as those based here. Main problem is that those on the phones don't actually have any knowledge on the company they're working for, so how can the offer the appropriate service?

Everyone deserves to make a living. HOWEVER, I don't see how you can have a call centre with people who, while they may SPEAK English, their accent is so heavy that you cannot understand what they say. I've lost count of the amount of times I've called a company and gotten through to a call centre in the back-of-beyond, and then had to continually repeat myself. I even had one operator calling me "Mr ..." (I'm ALL woman!) I'm also concerned about my personal details being held thousands of miles away; I think if a company is going to use an overseas call centre they should let you know up-front, when you sign up with them. Does anyone remember signing a form saying it was OK for their personal details to be sent halfway around the world - cos I certainly don't!!

T B
Cheap labour, i had trouble with my Internet service and phoned only to speak to a person that i could not understand as there English was terrible, while they were still talking to me i put the phone down i know this is rude but these call centres drive me to do this.

It has to be said if you pay peanuts you get monkeys, sorry to repeat but it is over there because of cost and we will pay for it.

Tada!

"GHO$T There country is one big heap of sh**e and there trying to sell you a top of the range phone... go figure" Agree with everything said by everybody except that I bet those in the call centres know it should be 'their' and they're' respectively!
