Christina | Can I afford it? |
So I would really like to buy the Dell XPS M1710 Total Domination laptop, and the price is $4,950 or $149/month. I make $7.00 an hour and work anywhere between 25 and 40 hours a week meaning I make between $700 and $1120 a month. Half of my monthly earnings go to my parents for car payments and insurance, and I have to pay for my own gas. In November I have to start paying back a $2000 college loan but its only $80 a month. I don't necessarily need a new computer however all of the other computers in my household all have some sort of issue(my old laptop got a virus because my mom refused to get any kind of virus protection that wasn't free and it didn't actually protect the computer, and the computer I am using at the moment will no longer let you watch videos and the sound doesn't work, one of the computers runs on Windows 95 and is no good, and the last one my mom won't let me touch) Do you think that I could afford to pay $149 a month for the computer or should I wait? Additional Details I had a "decent" laptop before...and then the virus struck...I restored the computer(losing everything I had on it) and now it is a piece of crap. The mouse jumps all over the place and you have to beat the crap out of the keys to get it to type...and you have to restore it every 3 months(and it only decided to start messing up a month after the warranty went out) . I'm looking for something better than decent...something I can play games on without having to worry about it overheating(which the old laptop did constantly). I want a computer that will last for more than a year and it has to be a laptop because we don't have room for another desktop in the house(my mom refuses to get rid of the old crappy ones and she won't move my sisters computer out of my room and into my sisters room...don't ask me why, I'm convinced its because she is insane) |

If you live at home, don't pay rent, and don't go out much for entertainment, then you can afford it. It would be good to have if you spend most of your time on computer. You will at least have 120 after payment for extras.
And the people above is right you can get a laptop for 800-1500 easily in good quality. But i'm not sure which country your from. |

Pay the car off -pay the loan off-then start saving money and buy one outright.Always put a quality virus protection as well as a spy wear program on your computers. It will save your computer and your pocket book. |

$4950 is waaay too much to spend on a laptop! I am using a laptop right now that we got for like $700 and it works great! It is a Toshiba Satellite A105-S2001. We got it a couple of years ago but it still works great. Maybe there is a newer model out now that you can look into. $4950, way too expensive. Save up around $1500 and get a nice laptop without the huge price. |

You don't need more debt. The interest on the lap top would not be worth it. I would save the 149.00+ monthly until you have enough to buy a laptop up front. I would choose a cheaper laptop. This laptop is a WANT not a NEED. |

why in the world would you spend 4,950 on a laptop? that is first of all way too expensive expecially for a product that will be worth 1/2 that in 1 years time due to product advancement.
The most you should spend on a laptop should be around 2500, and that is still too much. If you dont even need a lap top, why not just get a HP or compac for 1600 or and imac now they have them for 999. and the graphics are amazing!
I know someone that just bought an Acer computer for their brother or something, and it was only 400. Granted Acer is not an hp mac or dell, though the guy was pretty psyched as the computer was surprisingly powerful and has all the up to date stuff. Plus at 40hrs a week you will be making BEFORE taxes 1120. taxes take about 30% of that (or $336) so at the maximums hours you are working, you will earn approx $784.
a month, which divided by 4 weeks is $196/week half of your money goes to car payments and you pay your own gas. so your total of $784/2 = only $392 divided by 4 weeks leaves you only $98/week plus $80 month for college loans ($20 week.)
so a computer at $149/month is $37.25/week plus your $20 from your college loans. so as a minimum not counting your how much you must pay for gas,--- from your $98 per week that you have to spend $57.25 would go to the computer and loans, leaving $40.75 which is about the price to fill a tank of gas right now. leaving you with $0. -thus none for food or clothing, or anything else.
basically you would have nothing left .
and for a computer that you would be spending twice as much as you need to when your can find one for half the price and a better brand. Gee even Sony has amazing computers at half that price! |

I would never pay $4,950 for a laptop. You can get a decent laptop around $1500. |

It looks like you could technically afford it, buy why would you want a computer that cost so much? I mean, unless you are planning on making your living by being a professional video gamer that laptop is overkill! Sorta like the housewife that buys the 5MPG $75,000 Hummer to go grocery shopping and to Wal-Mart! lol. If I were you I would go for the Dell Inspiron 1520 for less than $1000 or $30 a month. With all that money you save you could either save it or buy stuff you need. Also remember that computers drop in value pretty quick. Last years $5000 laptop is worth $1000 today. |

No, you cannot afford that, not even in the ballpark. You need set your sites lower at 7 bucks an hour, rather than looking at a 5000 dollar computer. |

I think that you should weigh your options think of it like this how long will you use this computer and how long do you plan to live with your parents if you are planning to stay awhile yet then I think that you should look at a computer from dell that offers all of the things that you have mentioned that you are looking for and then after you write down exactly what you need and what extras that you want call dell and see if they offer a computer with your needs and wants but is a little less expensive, price high or low does not always mean good quilty so go through and think about it and then decide what is best for you and your income |

your shuld better wait....or get a lower end model, prices have fallen quite a bit and you can get a good one with a lot of power (processor) and ram and space (hard drive) for a much lower price than this one.... |
