it's not the account that I use so he wouldn't have access to any of my money and I also have internet banking so I could see everything he was doing. I take on board all of your comments. OK Listen UP here. He has bad credit for a reason and you really do Not want him to be able to ruin your credit. Trust all of us saying this would be a bad move.
Ok now here is a solution to is poor credit. There are credit cards called "secured cedit cards" If he has mone to open an account, then I reccomend him going to Providian bankcard to open up a Secure Card. This will give him the opportunity to have a card and he can only charg what he has in the account.. This is done to build credit if your history is not so good. He should charge things that he usually pays cash for and pay them off every month. This will help him reestablish his credit score so that 1 day he will be able to buy you ring. And then you can merge your accounts w/ each other. But please please remember history repeats itself. So make him do it on his own.

I don't know your situation, but I would recommend against this.
If your boyfriend has bad credit, there's a reason. He should open a checking account on his own (bad credit will not affect his ability to do this). |

I understand your situation.
If you give your boyfriend a card on your account, you will be considered "financially linked" by the credit reference agencies. This will mean your credit reference will take a nosedive and you'll be in a worse situation than you are now.
Banks are not keen to give ordinary current accounts to people with a bad credit reference, although there certainly used to be special accounts for people with bad credit scores. This involved a card that was not a debit card, but just a cash card. You would have to get money from a cash machine (not for use in shops or on the internet) and the cash machine would never give you more money than you had in your account. This worked well for people with poor credit scores who needed a bank account and access to money, even though banks would not trust them with a debit or credit card. Ask around, I wasn't aware that these type of accounts were no longer in existence.

But either would be REEEEALLY STUPID. He has bad credit for a reason. You'll be sorry in the long run if you give him access to either your bank account, or your credit. |

Your partner is in a predicament. I suggest you let him find a bank that will allow him to open an account. This is not your problem. He has bad credit for a reason, and if he gets access to your bank account, he will ruin your credit as well. Some people are nice people, but are terrible with money. You don't need that in your life.
Let him sort it out. Do not put him on your account. That is very dangerous. I have friends who have done this and found out the hard way what a bad idea it is.
He needs to learn the consequences of having no bank account. You could set up an account for him in your name, and make all the withdrawals yourself for him, but that is time consuming. He should go into a few banks and ask if they have any accounts he can use. This is his problem, not yours. Do not get involved. I know you love him, but if he stuffs up your finances, trust me, the relationship will be over. Some people just need to learn the hard way that money needs to be managed.
Do not get a joint account with him. Do not link your account to his. Do not add him to your existing account. Surely there will be a bank or credit union who will allow him to open an account. Ask about overdraft protection and the different kinds of accounts they offer. Do not get your finances involved with him. The fact that he has bad credit is a huge alarm bell.

Do not make this mistake. As someone else said he has bad credit for a reason. He can open an account and have a debit card. If you have your name on an account and he runs up an overdraft or anything you will be held liable. I would not even go out with someone who was irresponsible about money.
I sincerely hope you do not do this very foolish thing. Sorry Hun...just keeping it real. |

If you are insistant on sharing an account, go to your branch and ask to open an additional "joint" account. Then he can have a bank card that will access that only, and you can access both your account and the joint account with your card.
You don't need a credit check to open an account, unless you want overdraft protection - but in his case, I wouldn't do that.
You can open an account with as little as $1. |
