They do not have to take it. Store owners have the right to refuse service to anyone, as long as it's not based on race/sex/age.
They'd prolly just tell you to get the hell out.
If the manager or owner isn't there, the cashier may have to count it, based on store policy, but I doubt he would. You can try it, just don't get your retarded little hopes up.
Edit: I see people saying it is legal tender, and they can't refuse it. Not true. They are just answering for 2pts, they don't really know. |

that's just common sense.
if you keep it to like under $.50 they may take your change.
anything more is insulting.
would you leave a waiter/waitress a tip in just pennies? |
|

Britt
|
well they wouldnt be very happy.
theres a chance no one would take it. |
|

IWIU
 |
It's legal, but they might not be too happy.
would be better if you got some coin wrappers and rolled them up
the bank will give you some for free |

Yes, it is legal tender. But, for the poor cashier at least put it in rolls! |

IT's not illegal. They would not accept all pennies. You need to go the bank. |
|

Thomas H
 |
Legally they have to accept it, but the cashier might just flip out and murder you |

Cashier might not like it but.. I think you can. |

Cyanide Assassin

Yes. Sure you can. You would just look bad in front of everybody. Try quarters .. ^_^ |
|

yea you could. but the cashier would hate ur guts and ....it'd take a lot of time to count |
|

u can but you would have to roll them in those papers. otherwise no they wont accept it. too time consuming. they have other things to be doing. or most grocery stores have that coinmachine where u put all your coins in it, it counts it and gives you a receipt and you take it to the cashier and exchange it for cash. then you can leave and go buy elsewhere. |

I've seen kids get turned down for wanting to pay with too much change. They don't have to accept any transaction, they'll have the legal right to turn away, or tell you to put it in rolls and come back. |

It's legal and I'm sure if you're going to be a jerk about it, they'll be a jerk about it, too. |
|

That would be a d*ck move.
They don't have to take it.
They can refuse anyone and it's not discrimination, a lot of stores have a sign that says they have the right to refuse anyone for any reason.
I would probably refuse and throw them at you.
It would be worth risking a crappy job. =)
Don't be an ***, why are people so rude these days.
Get a life, think of how that person would feel.
And why would you buy things from a store you don't like.
Sounds smart to me. Not.
Why don't you be considerate and not a jackass. |
|

kc17170

sure they would.. but they would get pissed cause they gotta count it |

yea, u can. but the cashier person is gonna b really p-ed. so will the people in line behind u |

They have to be rolled for sure, after a certain amount it isn't considered legal tender anymore. Don't be stupid, just don't go to the store and wake up because that's just idiotic. |

Depends on the store. They might be pissy but they just might take it. You can always speak to the manager about it. A lot of stores will be flexible for customers. Some stores refuse it if its not rolled. The best thing to do is to go into the store and talk to the manager and ask them what their policy is. |

They can't refuse the pennies unless it's a mom and pop store and it's the actual owner or something, but usually chains won't refuse. I pay in change all the time, money is money. Go for it. |

Money is money but if you show up with 500 pennies there is the counting issue. Just go to the bank and get then exchanged into something more reasonable or you can spend the pennies little by little. When the total is 2.54, give them say $3.04 or $5.04 that way you will use them up and not get any more as change. That's what I do instead of just accumulating them like a lot of people like to do. |

They are suppose to take it because it is legal currency. Some places may not follow this because there isn't a penny police running around arresting cashiers who don't accept it but they are suppose to take the pennies. Some places have a policy that if there is more than 50 cents in pennies that it must be rolled with a name and phone number on the roll. Personally, I would prefer to count it out no matter how many there are because that way I am sure to get the correct amount. |
|

jOn

yeah but it sucks for the cashier |
|

White Devil
|
its legal tender and they have to take it, but they can refuse business to you & ive even been told i have to roll it up. Ive used while note paper cut strips and wrote 50 cents on it. People that refuse it are just lazy cuz they dont want to count a million pennies in their draw at the end of their shift. |
|

Margrie P
 |
well they aren't going to reject a customer that has money. I mean they might get annoyed with you but they woun't say no to you. But if you didn't have the right amount of money and you made them count all of the pennies then I don't know they might kick you out. Hope I helped. |
|

X-TINA

if they are rolled up it shouldnt be a problem |
|

Happpy
 |
I think you're allowed to, that's funny =] |
|

Pancho R

It is legal and yes, they should accept it. Some stores may not just because its a hassle but, they would be more inclined to do so if you rolled them up. |
|

:)
 |
Everyone would probably get irritated with you.
But no there isn't any rule/law against it that I know of. Like you said "it is money." You're still paying for the product. |
|

soho
|
yeah you could, but that would be really annoying.
like if someone gave you money in just all pennies...would you like it?
no one likes change. |
|

It is legal tender but they don't have to accept it. The question then becomes how much of a stink do you want to cause? Would you be willing to sue them? now that would be funny. What would be even more funny is that I bet you can find a lawyer to take the case. LOL |
