billydee49 | Can I live on $1400 per month and retire? |
I'm 57 and my home is paid for. I would like to retire but am afraid of not being able to live on $1400. I haven't saved any money other than maybe $10,000 in RRSP's but that is about it. I'm actually pretty ashamed that I don't have much but that's the way life went for me. |

ABSOLUTELY !!!
especially if you do not have a mortgage ..
there are people your age who are working FT !!!!
and struggling !!
That is not bad but if you are in good health
do a easy PT job like meals on wheels ..my dad is looking to do that for the sake of being busy !! not because of the money !@! |

Well many factors have to be looked at.
1. lifestyles buying coffee downtown, golf game, clothes, gambling, and so on..........
2. Taxes for property and personal income
3. Cost of living - food, water, heat, telephone, insurance, excetra...
so if you cut here and there it can be possibly done |

Trust me, there are people making far less than $1400 a month that are living well. Will that $1400 be guaranteed for life? Will it increase with cost of living? You have to think about costs 5, 10 and 20 years from now. It's good that your home is paid for because that's usually a big expense for most people. Do you have debts ... credit cards and such??? I would encourage you to get rid of them asap. You may want to scale back on some things you blow money on that you really don't need. A $40 cell phone is nice to have but that's $480 a year. If you put that $480 into an account in 10 years it's $4800 plus interest that will accumulate. What about all the cable channels? What about dinners out? You dont have to stop living but you can stop overspending. If you make $1400 a month, try living on $1000 and socking away $400 a month for the next 10-15 years. Make sure you get a decent return on investment. Think about a part time business for tax advantages and you may find you don't want to totally retire. You still have another 30+ years left so try to save as much as you can from the $1400 so that you'll have even more money in 5, 10, or 25 years. |

Depends on yer lifestyle and how you spend what you have. Taxes and utilities can eat yer lunch, and dinner too. Find a good side line job, so you can make a few bucks to spend and salt a bit of yer $1400 away instead of widdlin' it down every month. Yer not alone buddy. |

You can live on less, easily. My advice: budget, budget, budget. I easily live on about AUD$400 a month, and that includes things like food, electricity, water, internet. |

yes you can , depending on the cost of living in your area and your lifestyle. I would be more concerned with outliving my money unless you have guaranteed income indefinitely. Inflation will also be a contributing factor. |

Get some paying tenants and go on a tight budget. |

It depends on your location. I am in Washington state and it would be a tight squeeze, but it could be managed. Hit sales, second hand stores, use the barter system and so on. Having your home paid off is a major plus. |

I assume that living costs would determine how you can live but to me it sounds like you are pretty well off.
Better than I am right now anyway :)
Seeing as how your home is paid for all you need to worry about is annual property taxes and house insurance, regular bills... phone..electricity.. etc.
I dont know exactly what your financial situation is.. but if you feel like retiring go ahead..if not then dont. Its a personal choice. |

Hi...
First of all, you really have nothing to be ashamed of. My first question to you (actually it's a 2-parter) is a) Do you live in Canada and b) Where, in Canada ? I'm in my very early 40's and I was fed up with the taxation system in Canada... so I got the hell out of there. I live in Asia where I teach English and I make excellent money. The point of my story, in case you were wondering, is that I know quite a number of Canadian retirees who have come to Korea to teach English in their retirement and still make a pretty good wage ... and that's over and above any pension that they are receiving. Hope this helps. |
