Can I sign a check made out to me and give to somone else to deposit in their bank account?
I have a check that is made out to me. Is it possible for me to endorse it and give to a friend to deposit in to his account? I owe my friend money and I figured I can endorse the check and give it to him to cash. Is this legal? I just closed my bank account because I am moving and I just got paid by check. So I cannot deposit it. What are the issue with this?

Love Her Madly
Yes, it is correct. The uniform commercial code covers this type of transaction, and banks are bound by the UCC.

You indorse the check to you friend as described by others here, by writing "pay to the order of (your friend's name)" on the back of the check, and signing your name (as it appears on the front of the check) below it. Your friend can simply deposit the check into his/her account, and although it is subject to a hold period before the funds will be released to your friend, the transaction will ultimately work (as long as there are sufficient funds in the drawer's (the person who wrote the check) account.

write on the back of the check: "pay to the order of:"
then write the persons name you're giving the check to.
then sign your name below that.
when he/she takes the check to the bank.
on the 4th line, he/she signs it to endorse it again.

That is called a third-part check. His bank may not accept it. If I were him, I wouldn't either. Go cash it and give "someone" a money order.

barksabit
Once you endorse your check by signing the back it is as good as cash. Many businesses may not cash it if it is not you presenting it but most banks will. They will just require the other person to sign it also.
The best thing to do is to write on the back, under your endorsement "pay to the order of... "then insert the name of the person to whom you are giving the check. They will also have to sign it at the bank when they go to cash it. They will also probably need ID.

A Landers
Yes but you will need a record of paying him the money. Make sure you get a receipt that is signed and dated. This is a business transaction handle it accordingly, even though it is your friend.

Huba
Yes, it can be done. But sometimes a hold is placed on such checks when deposited. Is the check drawn on a local bank? Go there and cash it. They will verify the funds are there and give you the money in cash. It seems doubtful that you owe the friend the exact amount as your check so this way if there is any extra left over you will get to keep it. Otherwise, don't expect him/her to give you the difference until the check clears.

Yes, it is legal.

Agent 40
Yes endorse it over if its ok with his bank. Go to bank together. Have Id's ready.

Or go to a check cashing place.

go to bank the check was issued from and cash it their.

malty21
Sure can... As long as the bank accepts third part bank checks.

you can do this and it is perfectly legal to do.
Your friend will have to endorse the check under your name as well
Be warned that your friend might have to wait for a week to get the money into his account.
If this does not work, Walmart can cash your check for a small fee.

Smooches....
Yes!

kapn
Sure but the bank will hold the check until it clears...5 - 8 business days.

FRANK
The easiest way is to cash the check at the bank on which the account it opened. The bank must cash the check, even if you do not have an account there.
