Can I start another checking account with another bank while I have a charged off overdrawn account elsewhere?
I have an overdrawn bank account that's been charged off and in collection services. I would like to start another checking account at another bank so I can start paying that one back and so I can pay off some other debts. Will the old bank take everything out that I owe from my new account if I do start another account. Am I even ABLE to start another bank account at another bank with my previous debt to another bank?

Banks report overdrawn accounts. That doesn't mean that no bank will allow you to open a checking account you just may have to try at several banks. The larger banks are usually a little more lenient in allowing new customers than smaller banks.

In theory yes, but if they run a credit check they will see it and probably won't allow you to open a new account.

Go to a local bank and explain the situation, since they will run a credit check,

if you run into problems you can always get a savings account, to deposit checks then use money orders to pay bills until you can clean up your credit

chances of opening a new checking account is, at best, extremely remote.

Couple things with your situation: Chexsystems most likely has a report of your charge off. That in & of itself will keep you from getting an account. Honestly, its kind of hard to buy the fact that you need to open a new checking account in order to make good on another one that was charged off. It is actually quite the opposite. You need to make good on your old account in order for you to get a new account. Just like a credit card. If you had one charged off, why would I give you another one to do the same?

The only way this will work out for you is to pay off the charged off account. Even after its paid, ChexSystems keeps the record of the charge off for 5 years. During that time, it will be at 100% the banks discretion if they let you have an account. Some will not even let you have a savings account. Some will let you do savings only. So you need to shop around to see who will let you in. Chances are you will also have ATM card or check card restrictions also.

Good luck

you can get another account but you have to go talk to them and they will tell you when you start the account. and no the other bank sold your debt to another company so they no longer care if you owe on it or not. the collections company will have to place a lien on you but they would most likely garnish your wages but they will only do that if its worth it which most likely it is not.

Last I knew you should be able to open up another acct with another bank. However, this was approximately 7 years ago when I did this so laws may have changed. They also may be state regulated. I'm in CT.

Yes, you can start another account at a new bank. But some banks will be unwilling to open an account for you when they look at your credit score (if it's really bad). Don't give up, there are smaller banks who aren't as picky as the big banks if that happens to you. Be persistent and you'll find a place that lets you do it.

I have good news and bad news....

I'll start with the bad news first.

If that's account is charged off and sent to collections, it's a 90%+ chance that it's already at ChexSystems. I'm not discouraging you to apply with a bank to try your luck, but I'll let you know what you're up against. While it's unlikely they would take the money out of any new checking account you open, providing that you're even approved for a checking account in the first place being on ChexSystems.

Now comes the GOOD news.

You do have an option that should help. AccountNow
http://www.accountnow.net/info/benefits.aspx
is the PERFECT alternative to a checking account that you can get being on ChexSystems. It's 100% guaranteed approval, free direct deposit, a MasterCard debit card, and online bill pay that builds credit with PRBC http://prbc.com/default.php?

There is a startup fee ($29 for the premier serivce) and a $10 monthly fee, but at least you can continue life as normal with something that you'll find better than the bank account that you originally had

There's this thing called chex systems that keeps track of everything you just mentioned. Basically, the new bank will have to verify your soc. through chex systems and that charge off will appear on there - and there's this policy where banks cannot open new accounts to people that have been reported on there. I would at least try, but I'm pretty sure that unless you provide them with a letter from the other place where you owe stating they're paid off, you will not be able to get another bank account anywhere... sorry...
