Yes, you can do that!!!. You will just need to budget your spending. Make sure that you have a buffer amount of money each month so that you can pay for items that "come up". Also you should set aside an amount for savings. On your income you can do this easily. A couple hundred would be great. Oh, and the last piece of advice is to limit yourself to eating out. This includes the week for lunches and dinner with friends on the weekend. Hope that this helps! |

Of course! I have a family and I survived on 30K a year before. I'm sure if you budget well and becareful on what you spend, you'll be ok. You should have a financial plan, so you know how much you'll be paying on bills, groceries, rent, mortgage etc etc...and then you'll know how much you have at the end of every month. |

I've survived on $9k a year. All depends on what kind of lifestyle you want to have. The further you get from a major city the cheaper (generally) it will be to live there. |

My husband made $23,000 last year. We have 3 children. We survived just fine. No help from anyone or any other income either. |

Yeah, you shouldn't have an issue.
I make about $25,000 a year with 2 kids to support, and am living fine. with 40k/yr and in a suburb of Chicago, you should be right about the same level.
If you're really freaking out, find a roommate. Craigslist.com for the win. |

I'm on way less than that and I'm surviving! Just don't get credit cards, they're the route of all evil. And budget for all your bills and food before you start buying shiny things :-)
Good luck! |

Only you can answer this question. It completely depends upon what lifestyle you are comfortable with.
For some people, 40K a year would be broke. For example, if you went to school to be a doctor, and so were saddled with $150K in debt, and then had to pay for malpractice insurance, a lease, etc... to establish your practice.... you would be in series NEGATIVE numbers. I wouldn't count on eating. Others that may have a problem with this salary are those with chronic illnesses. You're annual medical bills may make your 40K more like 10K.
However, for a good deal of people the 40K sounds like a good starting salary with lots of potential. If you're in this majority, then congratulations on the job. It should be enough for a young, healthy, debt free individual to make a living at.... and even.... add a spouse or child and still "survive" with. |

You absolutely can survive on $40K a year! That is an excellent entry-level salary. I am making only a little more than that now, and I have been employed for seven years. I live outside NY and rent a nice 2 bedroom apartment. I have to tighten my belt a little, but I certainly don't feel poor. You'll be fine!!! Good luck with your new job :) |

40,000 is about the amount an average public school teacher makes. That seems like a good amount. Are you satified with that much or could you make more? If you are living by yourself and don't need to feed or care for kids then you will be fine. I know a family of 4 who are surviving on an income of 30,000. |

First of all CONGRATS!! on graduating. As far as your question, I have a house, car, and have traveled to several different countries and been on vacation a good bit and I live on about 23,000 a year. You can live off pretty much anything as long as you budget well and don't spend it on stuff you are not gonna appreciate. Best wishes!!!!!!!! |

yeah u can, just get roommates to split the cost of living, or buy less stuff....40000 isnt bad for a person just graduating..trust me on that, theres alot of people whove graduated and have no money(debt theyve built up in college)! |

As long as you don't go do stuff like eat out every night or buy a new car once every two years, then you should be fine. |

the cost of housing i am sure is higher than houston, but if
you shop around for an apartment, i think you can find good
value, it may take a little time, but yes, i feel you can survive
on that salary. i also suggest driving a small economy car.
very best of luck to you my friend and God Bless. |
