I am a college grad in the NYC / NJ area with a job offer for 40k a year. I have never lived on my own and am not sure if I can realistically live on my own. I would like to, but like I said, i have never been completely on my own so im not really sure. |

Yes you can; and even less. |

$42,000 a year is the median household income in the US. That means 1/2 of all households make LESS than $42,000. The median house hold size is 4 or 5 people. If a family of 4 can live on $42,000, a single that can't live on $40,000 is WAISTING too much money. |

if u have nothing to pay lets say car insurance , rent, then ya thats good |

People can comfortably survive on 1/4th of that income. Just don't spend your money like the average American... actually seek out good deals and don't overpay because why would you want to pay more for the same thing? |

Depends where you live. $40,000 will be tough to cut it in Manhattan. If you get further out you should be able to make it. |

You're going to have to be pretty tight with the cash. Whatever you do, stay out of debt. No credit cards that you don't pay off each month. No car loans. Zippo.
It would be easier to live in, say, Kansas on $40k per year. You're going to find it tough in NYC or NJ. Find roommates. That will be key to your survival on that kind of income. |

For a college grad in NYC that is pretty low. That would be a good salary in almost any other part of the country though. In an average city, a person can easily live on $20,000/year, and $15,000/year isn't too difficult either. |

Why don't you know? You should be familiar with your own budget by now. Set one up and figure out what your expense-to-income ratio is. |

Look at your living situation and what rent would cost you. It is not a bad salary for someone living where I do, but I am sure living costs are much more high out there. Do your math, make sure you account of all the costs youll have, health insurance, food, clothing, rent, utilities, GAS MONEY!!! Don't sell yourself too short though either. Having a nice margin of extra money is always helpful for when the hard times come. |

As long as you get on a strict, written budget, you'll be fine. Stay away from debt and save as much money as you can. |

You should be bring home around $1150.00!
In New York that is rent.
Now don't forget your student loan repayments.
I would not live in the city...yet I would stay close enough to use public transportation. Maybe even try the NJ side for an apt.
You will make it as long as you are single and have no kids or other debts.
If you have other obligations I would suggest moving! |
