suspended_acctx3 | Can You Write Yourself a Check? |
Well, I am low on funds and I have about 9 dollars in my savings account (college student.) Since most ATM's only allow you to withdraw $20, is it possible I could write myself a check for the amount and then cash it at a bank and get the cash? |

you do not have to write a check, just go up to the teller and ask to withdraw the $9 from your account. But if you want to write a check to yourself you can but when you go to cash it they usually want to cash it against your account in case it bounces, but since it is coming from your account anyways you will just be wasting a check. If you are asking if you can write a check for more than you have, the answer is yes at certain banks, however they will usually charge you a $25 fee for overdrawing your account... a lot of atms will also let you overdraw your account and then charge you the fee later |
|

what?
|
sure. though if you cash it at a bank other than your own, they might not be willing to cash it for you. and if you want to cash it at your bank, you could always just use a normal withdrawal slip. |

Yes, you write the check to Cash, or you can just put your name, and endorse the back. Hang in there! |

If you go to your bank- You don't have to write yourself a check- you can just withdrawl the money from your account. |

yes. however, hold off endorsing it on the back with your name exactly as you have it in the 'pay to the order of' section until you are ready to cash it. do not make it out to 'cash'; if you lose it before you endorse it, it's as good as currency. |

I assume you are not allowed, to overdraw on your account but are thinking of cashing the cheque at another bank. The bank teller will follow the procedures of that bank and in all likelihood will refuse to pay out the funds. If they decide to cash it your bank will probably not honour it and charge you a fee. Now the fee will overdraw your account and you will also be charged overdraft interest, plus the bank out the money can lay a charge against you or place it for collection if you don't pay the money back promptly and your good credit rating goes down the toilet. Before the days of electronic banking there was a practise called kiting which was kind of a financial game of leapfrog. If you cashed a cheque at one bank it took 3 or 4 days to clear through the other bank giving the cheque writer time to run to his bank to put in enough money. The problem is that they would write another bum cheque on another bank account at another bank and sooner or late the scam would be discovered. With the electronic clearing of cheques, almost instantly this scam is history |

NEVER write a check to CASH because anyone can cash it if you lose it. Write it out to (yourname) and your bank will cash it for you. |
