kinglee28 | Can a bank just close my account? |
I got a nice letter from the bank today (barclays) offering me a £3000 overdraft, i thought, how nice of them, so i rang them up, to try get £250, when i get through they tell me my account has been closed on august 26th.
They dont know why, they havent told me it was going to happen, and they have continued sending letters as though i am still a customer, this is the first i have heard of it closing.
Admittedly, i was -£34, but i am supposed to have an overdraft on there of £100 so it shouldnt be a problem!
Luckily, my money is in an alliance and leicester account, but i use my barclays one for ebay, and direct debits and stuff.
what happens to the money that should be going into that account?
Can they legally do this? |

Barclays are the biggest rip off bank out there.
go to the ombudsman. |

unfortunately, they can close your account if you are in a negative balance for too long.
even with an overdraft agreement, banks won't risk losing more funding.
the solicitations come from the marketing group which might as well be on another planet. marketing wants customers. finance wants risk free customers.
keep bugging their customer service dept to find out what happened and to ensure that nothing is reported on your credit history. |

Yes they can its the banks right to close and account they have to give you 30days notice if money has been paid in it will just get returned to sender!!
If you had a overdrawn balance they will write it off and it will appear on your experian report as bad credit! xx |

They can close your account; they don't have to deal with you if they don't want to. But they obviously haven't told their direct mailing people yet!
A computer operator may have closed it by accident (it happens! especially if you have a common name). Then, of course, the person you spoke to might have made a mistake, and your account is still open. I think it's strange that you haven't had a letter from them saying it's been closed.
Try logging in to internet banking. If you get through to your account, it's still there. If not, you need to start talking to them. Get a list of questions ready on paper. It's easy to forget them while you're being redirected from department to department. |

They can close your account, but you can appeal...You should be worrying about what's been happening to your direct debits. |

Of course, they can close your account.
Like most banks...they are here to make money on your back...and does not really about your situation.
So, I will suggest to switch and switch again...taking advantage of all their offer available...and leave them their stranded.
For instance, first direct offer £100 on your bank account if you switch to them.
Most of the bank transfer all your direct debit to them...so the transfer is painless.
Stay with 3 months and then move to another offer...especially if it is only to use with your ebay account.
Natwest, had an offer of £25-50 per account...
All the best.
(They played with you....play with them: this is my advice) |

Legally? Yes of course they can.
Maybe you just don't put enough money through the account on a regular basis so they think its not worth the effort as they cant charge you anymore to write you letters.
Have you been one of the people to claim back bank charges? That may explain it also.
Whatever the reason, its just they don't want you as a customer anymore. They dont have to give you an account if they dont want to. Its up to them. |

There are some banks which are closing accounts of those ina an iva or bankrupcy, but they would still usually give notice. I woiuld ask to sspeak to someone at your actual bank in fact i would personally go there and ask why the account was closed without you being informed. yes they can close your account fair enough, but you should have been given notice so that you can open another, to make arrangements for bills and wages etc. |

They can close your account any time if you do not have a regular income going in to a current account. Because there was no regular income you would not be entitled to an overdraught anyway especially with Barclays. |

Banks can close your bank account anytime they wish, however they MUST provide you with written notice of their intent to do so.
It seems to me they may have closed your account by accident! If you were supposed to have an overdraft of £100 and were only £34 overdrawn I doubt that is it.
Phone them and ask what's going on, as there must be an audit trail in place to see who closed your account and why.
If it was a mistake, it must be rectified asap and the account reopened, although they may not be able to keep previous account number.
Any payments e.g. Direct Debits, Standing Orders on the account that was closed will all have been cancelled when the account was closed, so WILL reject.
Therefore I suggest you call Barclays ASAP and demand an explanantion as to why this account was closed and why they have broken FSA regulations by not informing you that they were doing so! |
