Im british and working in the United states temporarily so I do not have any kind of american bank account. I recieved an order cheque for the sum of my pay, so can I just go to the bank the cheque is from with my id and and get it cashed?

Yes, they will just take your fingerprint. Some Mexicans stole our checks and cashed them without bank accounts.

Best if you go to a bank branch for the bank from which the check was drafted. You'll need ID - but at least THEY know the other guy because his money is in that bank. Any other bank should do as well, but you may have to do some extra paperwork and maybe even wait a day or so for the check to 'clear'. And the bank may charge a small fee for the paperwork that verifies that your check is REAL.

kurticus1024
you could go to a check cashing place and they take 3%

or go to the bank the check was written from, with ID and a credit card they would cash it. Maybe open a bank account for $20 while you are there.

Yes, you can cash it at a branch of the bank that the cheque is drawn on.

If there isn't a local branch (pretty common) then you'll probably need to open a bank account to use while you're here. If you have legal status you can open an account easily enough. I'd suggest an account at a credit union instead of a bank; they'll treat you much more fairly than any bank will.

stevejensen
Yes. Take it to the bank it was issued from. There will be no fee. There will only be a fee to cash it if you take it to another agency and not the issuing bank.

Some local liquors stores can cash checks, without fees, but they need to see an id.

Dick Tater
you will have to go to a cheque cashing place, show id and pay a service fee, usually 3%. money mart, western union, etc

mara2wild
Yes. they have Check cashing stations you can look some up in a phone book....Thing is they take a percentge out of your check for the service.

Banks are really touchy about cashing a check if you don't open a account, they may or may not cash the check even though it was drawn from that bank...why don't you open and account with the least amount possible. That may solve your problem...Hope I helped you...
