my little sister wants to get a debit card. i want one, too but if an 11 year old can, so can i! oh well, so do you know if you can i mean one that just takes money out of a savings account or something. my mom wanted to know too, so don't say anything about asking my parent/guardian. I live somewhere near lake superior, so someplace near there would be helpful. i just want it so that i can go shopping and stuff like that without having to count out cash.

Yes you can, your mother just has to open a joint account for you and her. Of course she has to put money in it, you can not have a credit card. But a debit card is the same as cash, your parents can give you as much cash as they want. |

No. Any account you may have in the bank has to have a parent co-signature because you are a minor. Therefore you really don't have an account that's just yours, and you have no means of paying if you overdraw.
At your age you will have to wait awhile longer. I would continue counting cash for a few more years, and I would guess your mom can help you since you aren't driving either.
Every kid wants to go shopping and stuff like that. When you are employed you can spend all of your money that you want to spend. |

most banks will issue a debit card to nyone under the age of 18. you cant even open a account uless your 18 |

No- I'm sorry. The only thing an 11 year old can legally have is a custodial savings account, meaning you have to have your parent on it... and savings accounts can only come with ATM cards. ATM cards can not be used like debit cards because they do not have the visa logo on them- this is because federal law regulates that you can only do up to 6 withdrawal transactions on a savings account per month (up to 3 online transfers and up to 3 withdrawals that are not made in a bank.-- you can do unlimited ATM and in-bank withdrawals though...)
Until you are 15 and have a job, or 18 and no job you have to stick with the custodial account so there is no way to get a debit card.
There IS a solution though... if it's to go shopping or whatnot, why not have your mom buy you a visa giftcard next time she is in the bank? you can use THAT like a debit card, it just won't be linked to you account, it will have a pre-set limit on it. |

Yes, you can. Go to Visa Buxx, it is a parent loaded debit card. My kids really like it. |

Most banks will not give a debit card to a minor because you can use the card as credit/debit. Also, depending on your purchases, especially if you are using it like a credit card, without your pin, you can still overdraw your account. You can however get a ATM card and use the card any place that accepts pin based transactions. You need to ask the bank though. You will not however be able to use the card to make purchases online.

Maybe in some banks, but you'll DEFINITELY need a parent to cosign it. Cosigning is basically so you don't overdraft (Use more than you have). Banks can't pursue legal action against a minor, so they link it to a parents account so if you use more than you have, the difference comes out of your parents account. That way, they get a little piece of mind.
OR, you could just go n get one of those preloaded cards. It's pretty much the same as a debit card, but I'm not 100% sure it counts for anything finacially. Plus, not sure you can refill it at an ATM.
I'm not sure what the cutoff age for having a minor with a cosigner open a checking account would be though. I'm guessing 15, 16 maybe. |
