Can anyone tell me what exactly the benefits of decency are?
I ask this question out of utter contempt with the country (uk).
I have worked solidly for 5 years, paid all my taxes, paid all my child support for my son from a failed relationship and battled to be a part of his life, paid all my bills and want to get married, start a family and buy a house. Can I do it? NO! House prices are through the roof (pardon the pun) so I'd need to rent, which is exactly what people who refuse to work do. I've worked for 3.5 years as a debt collector dealing with people who have raided catalogues and bank loans/credit cards for all they can get and refuse to pay it back, whilst earning (in some cases) 40,000 a year in benefits! Don't misunderstand, there were people in a genuinely bad situation trying to get out of it but not being able to. I used to think being an honest, hard working citizen got you somewhere in life, but now, I'm not so sure. so I ask again, whan EXACTLY are the benefits of decency?

If you want to be a hermit, go for it. If you want friends, or simply to interact with other people more then once you should keep being decent.

I hear what you are say and have a huge amount of sympathy. What I can add to your view is this:

Being born in the UK is like winning the lottery compared to most countries in the world. Those with enough get-up-and-go in them can earn a very good living. So who are the people doing well in the UK? Within the working classes they probably did OK at school and have got a good job through education and the opportunities it brings, or they have taken a risk and started a business and put their earning potential in their own hands.

You chose debt collection as a profession. What about taking your 5 years knowledge and doing in better than the company you are working for now. Possibly more ethically!

If possible have a glass this is half full and seize the day, you are luckier than you think!

Good luck!

Personally, I never have to look over my shoulder wondering who is coming after me, and I can always pick up the phone, never worrying about debt collectors. As the others said, there's also a lot to be said for self respect.

sometimes i wonder that myself, i am the same kind of person , i try to be the most decent person i can be , but it seems you are kicked in the teeth everytime , the saying is now the bigger the B*****d you are the further you get on in life , but i say the people like that are weak and they have lost their self respect for themselves and others , so be proud that you are like you are , dont join the disgusting rat race we now all live in .

Well being a debt collector i am sure you see extremes of decent unlucky people and non decent people. It is self respect that you get from doing the right thing from knowing you have done the right thing even though it sometimes would have been easier to do the wrong thing.

♥♥The Queen Has Spoken♥♥
The benefits are self respect.

wise old sage
Self respect is worth something to some of us
and if everybody was a total sh*t the world would be a really lousy place to live, and not just as miserable as it is.

The UK wants it both ways: lets take care of everyone and have a welfare state (how noble!)... and lets have nobility with gigantic estates (how noble, literally! and quite INdecent.). You are caught in between. I'm amazed the British middle class is as big as it is. Its only becasue land is so irrelevant to the post-modern information economy that the middle class in Britain is as big as it is. Two words: Land reform. We need it here in the US, too, probably even worse. (What's up with "homeless" Native Americans?! This whole country was their home... and now quite a few of them are "homeless". Ironic and horrific.)

Soup Dragon
Self respect. Knowing that you are doing the right thing. It does seem though that it doesn't always pay to do the "right thing". Take businesses, go bankrupt one day and start trading again the next. These people have no morals and just leave the debt for others to pay. That's why this country is in such a state with debt and interest rates are so high. We just end up paying of other peoples debt. It is too easy to get bankruptcy ,these people should be made to pay back even if it's a small amount per week for the rest of their lives.
