Can i cash a check at my own bank rather than the one that the check is from?

Yes you can. It's safer for you to cash it at the bank the check is written on. If you put it into your account and it bounces, you could get stuck with an NSF charge even though it was not your fault plus the aggravation that goes with it. Wells Fargo sticks you with a $7 charge!

If you take it to the originating bank, they can tell you immediately if there is funds available to cash it. If not, then you get back with whoever gave it to you.

I work at a financial institution in Michigan. You can take the check to your institution, although it may be subject to hold. Institutions generally maintain their own policies on placing check holds, and the better standing your account is with them the less likely they are to hold a check. Your best bet would be to call your bank or take your check up there to see if their would be a hold, but they would definitely negotiate (cash) the check for you.

Yes you can. However, if you cash the check at your bank, they will put a hold on enough funds from your account to cover the check in case it bounces.

of course!

I think my bank used to insist that I had the funds in my personal account to cover the amount of the check I was cashing, but not sure what circumstances that applies to.

yes but it could take a bit of time to clear...

icemaster316_2001
yes you can most definitly do that!.

Alex
Yes. You can deposit into your own bank account at your branch of your bank or at another branch of your bank.

Yes, some banks are a little stricter than other as to how much you have in your account at the time to cover the check if it bounces.

wish I were
Only if you have enough in your account to cover the check. The bank will then be able to get it's money back if the check bounces.

Yes.

As long as you have sufficient funds to cover in case the check bounces...

Note... don't try to cash checks or money orders from people trying to overpay for an item you are selling and they want a huge Western Union money gram refund. That's always a fake check. The bank may not realize its fake until its too late, you'll have sent your money (and sometimes the thing you were selling) and be stuck with the bank charging it back to your account.

Its not the bank's fault you're dumb and fall for a scam.

gero g
very likely yes.

Of course... the money being cashed comes from the other person's account at whatever back they use, and you get it from your bank. How likely is it that you share the same bank?
Or even have an account with that same company's bank?

Yes it is usually much easier to cash a check at YOUR bank, not the bank the check is from. Everyone I know cashes checks at their own bank. Depending on the terms of your account, the fees are less for cashing it at your own bank and might even be free.

Yes, just give it to the cashier at your bank with a statement, and ask them to cash it for you.
