Get him to write to the bank, asking them to change it from a current account to a savings account. That doesn't have fees, and the money will be there for him if he ever returns. Just be aware that dormant accounts are eventually claimed by the Crown - that is if there is no transaction for some years - I think it is 15. If the account is left as it is, monthly fees will soon deplete the balance, and he could even find himself owing them money.
The other alternative is to get him to write to them giving you power of attorney then you could close it (or he could send you a blank cheque that you can use to clear the funds - if he would like you to send him the equivalent instead) but he would still need to write closing the account or he could still find himself owing £6 per month for an account with a NIL balance. |

i know someone who works in a bank and you definitely can't the account is in his name and only he can. It would be like if you are married and your partner decided to close your account against your will....you would not be impressed.
Sorry but it causes problems if they accept people closing peoples account. Probably best to leave it to be honest.

Ask the bank but I doubt it. Your brother can mail a notarized statement to the bank requesting the account be closed. |

I'm afraid he is the only person who can close his account. He can do it one of 4 ways.
First he gives you the power of attorney
Secondly he writes to the bank and inform them that you have access to his account and you can do what you want
Thirdly writes a letter himself and closes the account himself, which I can't see why he doesn't do that. In the letter he can then state that he wants to remainder of the money to be put into bank account .........
Fourth he leaves the account and forgets about it. The account will eventually do nothing once the money runs out due to paying the charges.

No, it's not your account. You can't do anything with it, any more than you could with a perfect stranger's account.
If your brother wants to close it, he can do so by mail or possibly even on line. It's up to him to contact the bank and find out what needs to be done. |
