JACKS | Can i put a stop on a direct debit? |
my phone co. have taken too much money from my account twice, so the bank charged me £70, the phone co. admitted it was their mistake and payed the £70, i have cancelled my agreement with them can i ask the bank to not pay them any more money because i dont owe them any money or can they just take any amount of money at any time whenever they feel like it? |

If you bank online, you can do this right now. It is immediate, otherwise pop in your local branch...it will also be instant.
Be careful though, as you will then your phone company coming to you saying they have not been able to collect the money, and will may be charge you fee to recover the money.

Yes. Contact your bank, and cancel the Direct Debit. Simple. Or if you bank on line, in your DD and Standing Orders area, there will be a facility to add or delete a DD. |

it depends where you are - I am in Australia and have worked for a bank for the past 4 years.
In terms of stopping a direct debit, if it is coming out of a savings/cheque account, then you can call the bank and have it cancelled.
However if it is coming out of your credit card, then the bank has no authorisation to stop the direct debit. You would think that they could then just cancel the credit card and issue you a new one with a different account number, however this is also unable to be done - as any direct debits/purchases that are charged on the old number, still carry through onto the new account for at least the first 3 months (this is so that if you forget to tell your gas/electricity etc company, they can still claim their fees and you get to keep your utilities).
The only thing (in aus anyway) that can be done is to 1st contact the (in this case) phone company and tell them to cease the direct debits. If they continue to charge you, you have to lodge a dispute with the bank and then they resolve it - eventually the company gets the message because it costs them a fee each time they are found to be in the wrong.

Yes, you can cancel it yourself online, or ask the bank to do it.
You may well get into an arguement with the phone company over money, but if they are making mistakes, keep a record of their admitting the mistake incase it gets taken further. |

Talk to the bank and you can get the payments stopped. They could even dispute the amounts that were over charged and you will get a credit for that. |
