she needs to go with you to the bank and sign it and show id. Then you will indorse the back and can put it into your account. The payee(sister) of the check has to be verified, that is why she needs to be with you. If she is only 13 then your parents will have to cash it for her. Your mom or dad will need to sign it minor by and then their name. |

If its a UK cheque drawn on a british bank and crossed account payee only then you will not be able to pay it into your account.
Your only option is to get the drawer of the cheque to re-issue it in your name OR get your parents to open up an account for your sister.
UK banking laws im afraid. |

no, you cannot pay a cheque into a different persons account. the only thing you can do is go back the drawer of the cheque, either get them to re-issue the cheque in your name or get them the open it up to cash (to do this they need to write 'please pay cash' along where it says 'account payee only' in the middle of the cheque) then go to the drawer's bank and cash it, but she would need to produce i.d anyway so that kinda mucks that up a bit. either that or just open her up a bank account in her own name and use the cheque to open it! takes 5 working days to clear but at least she'll have an account if she needs one! |

if it is crossed saying a/c payee, then no, if it is not then she just signs the back in front of a cashier at the bank |

Yes but if it's only to cash it, why bother. If you're in the UK go to 2Cash Generator" She will be charged a small sum for cashing it: 4% I believe, but ask first.
Oh. from the way you spell "cheque", I see you are in the UK.
I note her age. Prob. Cash Generator wont deal with her. She could open a savings account with bank or post office. I think a parent would need to go with her. |

My suggestion is to bring her with you, to either hsbc or halifax, whichever bank you feel better known as a personal customer. They will talk you through the procedure. It would be a good idea for your sis to bring ID, to verify that she is the person the cheque is made out to. To endorse it, she simply writes her name on the back. Then you sign your name too, and write down your account number, and lodge it in.
If the cheque is crossed A/c payee only, then sorry, it can only put it into her own account, and she would need her parents with her to open that. At her age, it will be a savings account. If they go to the branch where they are already customers, they will still need to bring their own ID and a utility bill to open a new account, even though it is for your sister. |

Not if it's a different name, and is not written out to you. |

got to your bank together and get your sister to sign the back of the cheque in front of the cashier - but it may take a few days to clear (which means waiting a few days before the cash is in your account) and then you can withdraw it, |

I don't think so. My husband and I have the same first initial and obviously the same last name (ie I'm Mrs X Bloggs and he's Mr X Bloggs) - HSBC wouldn't let me cash my cheque in his account as it had Mrs, not Mr on it. |

No you can't. Even if she endorses it, you still cannot. If the cashier accepted it, the cheque clearance system would throw it out as the names on the cheque and the account don't match.
Her only option is to take it to one of those cheque clearing places but as she is only 13 i don't know if she can use them. |

she will need to go to the bank with you and sign the back of the check there, even then i am not to sure why not use the £20:00 to open an account in her own name |

This is called a third party check which most banks do not accept but because of the dollar amount they may make an exception
Here's how to endorse it:
On the back of the check there is a signature line --- you sign here then underneath your signature write "Pay to the Order of" then write your sisters name then underneath her name have her sign her name---then you'll be able to cash/deposit it....
