Can some explain this banking procedure?
on sunday I bought at item with my debit card, it had been put on the wrong label and charged my acct 548.00. it was TOO much, so I returned it, the teller credited my card, and I bought a similiar item for 348.oo and again used my card. This all happened within minutes with me never leaving the store.

now my acct shows 2 charges and no refund, the bank says they are waiting on the store to submit the credit and the store says the bank is holding the credit. what can I do? My money is needed and is in limbo.

A credit is based on the merchant. When you use your debit card as credit without the pin, it must go through following that companies rules. (MC/VISA). Depending on their agreement with the merchant it can take anywhere up to 5 days for your credit to be given back. Debits are always before credits. Now in the case that they voided one transaction and just left the other that could take up to 48hrs. But if they did 2 purchases and one return, that may take up to 5 business days. All you can do is wait. The bank had no control on giving you a credit. Its on the merchant and their agreement.

Unfortunitely credits sometimes take longer to post, keep tabs on it though, keep checking daily.

It is just simply that the credit process almost always takes longer than the debit. It does not matter the trasactions are done in the same day and close time frame. I think that is because the debt need to go thru first before the system can credit your accout.

It will take 3 (working) days for the refund to appear in your account, even though the money leaves your account immediately during a purchase it actually take 3 days to reach the store account as well. There is electronic admin that takes place everytime a transaction occurs, the computer has to remove and allocate money to the right accounts.

If you have a receipt showing the credit, ask to speak to the store manager. It seems that the error is from the store not the bank. Check the numbers on the credit slip to verify there the same as the debit. If you don't get this resolved, call the corporate office and ask to speak to the regional manager of that store. You should then get some answers.

Yes, the bank put a "hold" on it. It approved the $548 transaction, but that doesn't go through immediately. It takes one business day for the actual money to be transferred from your bank to the store's bank. Then it approved the $348 transaction. The store issues the credit for $548, but again, it takes at least a day (sometimes more) for that transaction to clear. The bank is holding the $548 plus the $348 until the system is updated with the credit for $548. This is normal and happens all the time when you use your debit card, but you typically don't notice it when the purchases (and credits) are for small amounts.

I would advise you to use a credit card for this type of purchase in the future (and pay it off right away, so as not to incur finance charges), and leave your checking account out of it.

By the way, both the store and the bank will typically allow themselves the maximum legal amount of time they can take to "process" the credit. That is why I suggest using a credit card for higher end purchases. I hope this info helps.

It should be the store to put it back in. It does seem to take a couple of days more. Remember Sunday is not a business day.

There is nothing you can do but wait. It usually takes about 3 days for the credit to show up. It is in limbo like you said. You should have waited on purchasing the other item until your money had been credited back.

this is more common than you think?...All banks collect money straight away!...so they can invest it and"earn" interest on you're money...but,when it comes to giving it back?...each day they delay will earn "them" interest as well!...a friend of mine a few years ago!...went for a £6,000 bank loan for a kitchen, and they sent him a £60,000 cheque by mistake!...he banked the cheque straight away...then rang the bank to tell them about the mistake...in the few days it took to send them a cheque for the over payment...he earnt £48 interest on "their money"!...so it can work both ways...in any case what are "waiting" days?...at Banks all about...most money is transferred by computer is'nt it?...and if a large international bank was to increase their waiting days by one?...they will get extra interest...which could be a considerable amount...and thats why you're waiting for you're refund...

Sounds like another example of why you should use debit cards. If you'd used a credit card, it would all be paper transactions instead of actual cash out of your account.
