There are two answers to this and both are right because the information given is not clear. If the two discounts are taken together and become 35% of the original price then the new price is $292.50 If the employee discount is calculated after the sales discount then the calculation goes like this: $450-15% of 450 gives $382.50 less 20% of 382.50 gives $306. The use of the words "additional discount" makes me think the second answer is intended.

(set up a proportion and then subtrat your answer from the original amout)
so 15/100 : x/450. that is 450 x 15 = 6750 divided by 100 = 67.5. so then you subtract 67.5 from 450 and you get 382.5. That is the answer to the 15% discount.
so now 382.5 is your denominator on your new proportion.
so 20/100 (the new percent discount) : x/382.5
then do the same thing and you should come out to a discount of $76.5.
now 382.5 - 76.5= $306
your equations are:
15 X 20 X
___ : ___ ___ : ___
100 450 and 100 382.5
(scoot the numbers over the right lines - sorry it didn't turn out right.)
subtract what you get from your proprtion from the denominator. that's your answer.
