This is a scam they will draw the money back out of your account when it bounces.
It is a scam that is really common now someone writes you a big check and you refund part of it or send it on to someone else then weeks later their check was found to be bad, if you don't have money to cover the overdraft you can be charged with check fraud. |

The writer of the check can't "cancel it", but if the bank later finds out that the check was fraudulent, they can and will take the money back out of your account. This happens all the time. It is a common scam run anywhere people sell things (eBay, CraigsList, etc.). |

if its a fraudulent cheque then yes |

This is an old scam, it's called "advanced fee fraud." The usual method is to con someone into accepting a high value cheque and ask them to pay a third party a lower amount cheque in return for laundering the cheque through your account. You are spun some story about a military ruler in Nigeria or the like needing to "secretly" get money out of the country or some similar story.
They send you a cheque, for say £10,000. You are asked to put it in your bank and then send one of your cheques for say £5,000 and you are told to keep £5,000 for your help.
You wait for the funds to clear in your bank, all appears well and so you send you cheque for £5,000 from your bank.
The cheque you were sent then turns out to be stolen but your bank is not told until after you have sent your cheque out. The bank that issued the stolen cheque is entitled to cancel the cheque and take the money back from you because the cheque was stolen or fraudulent.
You then try to cancel your cheque but because your cheque is not stolen or fraudulent you can't get your money back.
You tell the Police and they look in the account your money was paid into. That account has been closed and the thief has taken your cash and disappeared.
It's a well-known and common scam. Ask your self why someone would really want to give you a large sum of money in the first place?
You are leaving yourself wide open to this scam and also to the serious Criminal Offence of Money Laundering. Walk, no run away from this before you get your fingers badly burnt. |

As most other answerers say you should be cautious about accepting cheques from people you don't know or trust, let alone then passing those funds onto another.
If you cash the cheque via, for example, a conversion shop ... and the cheque then bounces the agreement they sign with you allows them to come after you for the money.
If you deposited it into a sterling account in the UK of the bigger UK banks (any of the direct members of the clearings - ABBEY NATIONAL, ALLIANCE & LEICESTER, BANK OF ENGLAND, HBOS (HALIFAX AND BANK OF SCOTLAND), BARCLAYS BANK, CLYDESDALE BANK, The CO-OPERATIVE BANK, HSBC BANK, LLOYDS TSB BANK, NATIONAL WESTMINSTER BANK, NATIONWIDE BUILDING SOCIETY, The ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND, Bank of Ireland, First Trust Bank, Northern Bank, and Ulster Bank.) and since the end of November 2007 then a new set of rules apply.
After a full six working days your bank can't take the money back of you even if the cheque then bounces. I.e. deposit on a Monday, and you can be sure any time from the following Wednesday morning - you can withdraw the funds much earlier, but the bank will still have the right to take them back if the cheque then bounces.
However, this isn't true if you are a 'knowing party' to fraud... so if you have very good reasons, like the deal being too good to be true, not to trust the person giving you the cheque in the first place, your bank is unlikely to take the loss for your deceit. |

As I discover to my cost when the company I worked for went bust, if the cheque was fraudulent the bank will take the money back.
I worked on an agency basis so was paid commission. The company had been trading while insolvent so all cheques written for the last 2 months were fraudulent, and the receivers recalled the money.
First I knew was when £2100 was removed from my bank leaving me way over my overdraft limit.
My nice friendly bank immediately called in my overdraft and proceeded to add another £1800 in charges over the following 4 weeks.
Also just because you have been told a cheque has cleared, that doesn't mean it won't bounce later.
If a chequebook had been stolen, it could be when the statement showing the cheque arrives with the customer that he spots it. That could be two months after you took it.
If the bank then says signature forged they will take it back. When I was in retail we had a cheque bounced 4 months after we had accepted it on the grounds that the chequebook had been stolen.
I knew that to be a lie because I played golf at the same club as the guy, but it still took over a year and court action to get the money back! |

once the cheque clears and the money is in your acct you are still not the legal owner of the cash, the bank is.You become the legal owner after 10 working days from chq being paid in.So if the chq was found to be fradulent by the bank after 9 days they have the right to ask for the money back, even if you spent it. |

Once the cheque is cashed, it cannot be cancelled.
So get it cashed. |

Once the cheque has been cashed and the money has passed from your own account to the recipient's account, you cannot reverse the transaction. You need to stop the cheque BEFORE it is cashed. |

no as long as the money shows in you account they can not take it back |
