ALeoStar | Can you live off of $200 for two weeks? |
Provided that all major bills are paid, of which include your rent, car note, cell phone bill, student loans and gas, can you live off of $200 dollars for two weeks? When answering think about food, self indulgences, etc. If you don't think you can live off of that for two weeks tell me why and if you think you can tell me why. I am a new college graduate who is moving out on her own and am trying to learn to budget and save. Thank you. |

Yes. but you have to think of necessities. you need to remove the term "self indulgences from your vocabulary.
You need a budget for the $100 per week. If it's just you, that should be more than do-able:
Eat at home whenever possible, pack a lunch (if you made it through college (and you did), you know what Ramen noodles are).and it will be a great time to increase your cooking skills. Buy cheap cuts of meat or chicken, fresh vegatables and learn how to make nice and hearty stews and soups. literally, you can spent $10 bucks on ingredients and make a stew that will last five days.
I realize that depending on where you live, the $200 won't go as far. However, if you take things into your own hands, i.e. cook at home, pack a lunch, the money will go about as far anywhere. It's when you start eating on the economy etc.
Entertainment - Think Dollar Theatres rather than major first run movies. Like to dance? Go find a Swing Group in your area and take up swing dancing. It's cheap, a lot of fun, you'll meet lots of people and it will fill the hours with lots of social time. And, if its like most area, afterward, you end up at Dennys or Waffle House or wherever the local dive is and have a blast until 2:00 AM. (My son is 21 and does that and I'm amazed at the fun, the friends, and the cheap enjoyment they get from it). If it's not your thing, that's cool but think in those dimensions. Local coffee houses with open mic nights, that kind of stuff.
Finally, when you're young and starting out, it's important to understand that everything can be an asset: to use or misuse.
I can speak for other young people I personally know that are just starting out. I've noticed a number of the really good guys like casual dating to get to know people rather than deeper relationships. If you have an opportunity, let a guy or two take you out to dinner from time to time. It's good company, doesn't have to lead to anything, makes you both feel part of the adult professional scene, and gets you dinner!
Bottom line... if you put your mind to it, you'll be amazed at what you can figure out.
Good Luck!
Hope this helped. |

Thats a $100 per week. 25 for gas, 50 for food and 25 for misc. I mean your cutting it short but if you have a good size savings account and you are not a big spender than you should be fine except for maybe around the holidays. I think that I would work a second job to have some money in the bank. Or you could get a room mate. |

Depending on where you live, it is very possible to do this. You can shop for food at discount stores (they are everywhere) and limit your "self indulgences".
My advice would be to head to the store on day one of the two weeks. Go there with a list and coupons and only buy what you need to survive. Buy all the food and essentials you will need for the two weeks. Then, what you have left would be for indulgences. It probably won't be much, but at least you won't starve for a week.
Good luck! |

I could live easily on $200 for two weeks provided the other items you mentioned were covered. If you don't spend $$ on meats for each day, buy foods to make instead of whipping into the fast food place all the time, buy groceries in a store and not a convience shop, you should be able to spend about $50 per week on groceries and then have $50 per week on your 'self indulgences' - but that of course depends on what those are, too.
Right after I filed for divorce, my husband locked up our joint bank accounts.... I learned to live on oatmeal (which is good for you), dried beans, some vegetables and fresh fruits. I spent about $1.00-$2.00 per day. My dogs cost me more than that...but we managed just fine....
Also, you are young, start saving today. Try to put at least $20 into a savings account or something else every week. By the time you are mid 30's, you can be richer than others who didn't.
~good luck, I know you can do it...

Easy, even if I went and ate at Del Taco every night, $200 is more than I ever had when I was a student. |

$200.oo yes. easilly. just think if you go to the grocery store and buy breakfast and dinner for 50.oo that leaves you with $150.oo. Then if you spend 5.00 a day at lunchtime to eat than thats 50.oo for two weeks. So now youre down to 100.oo to do whatever u want. get ur nails done... haircut... dinner with your girlfriend. The biggest thing is to not blow it on fast food for alll three meals of the day. Other than that ur good!!! |

Hard times.

Sure you can if its just you on your own. Go to your local food pantrys or even walmart. I dont like that store, but when we are short on money they have some ok prices on food. Good Luck! |

$200 for 2 weeks, just for food. Yeah I think I could do that.
I am not a picky eater and like to cook myself so I think it would be fairly easy. I also hunt, so I could eat a few squirrels during that time as well. |

As a new college graduate no...
But as a single mother of two kids, yes!
When I was just first starting out in the world, I was buckwild! Living life to it's limits, always wanting more for myself, it was all about me and my shoe addiction, eating at the finer restaurants, buying name brand, going out to the club, partying, hair dresser/stylist, $200 wouldn't even get a decent outfit....
Now as a mom, I have to put the children's priorities first. I am more reposnsible with money, $200 goes a long way for me now. No more shopping at the good shoe store, it's all about Payless Shoe Source, Mcdonald's and generic brands, but that's life..
Live your life to it's fullest because when you get older, it's over.... |

Of course. I could make that stretch to a month or so.
It's called eating mac-n-cheese, ramen noodles, popcorn, casseroles and leftovers, giving up fancy expensive coffee and trips to the bars, no alcohol, etc. |

You can, and I have. Food is generally have to make the biggest compromise. Eat cheap. Things like spaghetti, ramen ect are all cheap and filling, which will leave you more money for other things and emergencies. |

Sounds like you have $200 to freely spend however you wish, since every bill has already been paid.
You need to break down the amount of days by the amount of available cash. In your case, that's roughly $14 a day you can spend.
It really depends on your lifestyle. If you need to go out alot you might be in trouble.
For me, I would go to the grocery store and figure out how to live on $5 a day. I know it's possible because I've done it. Establish what meals you will eat at home and get into a routine. If you can manage $5 a day for four days a week, then you have increased the amount of money you can spend the other three days (by spending only $5 for four days straight, you increase your spendable limit to $29 per day for the last three days of the week). Maybe you go out to lunch or see a movie on the other days.
Basically, you tighten your belt for four days of the week, and the other three you can spend a little bit more and do something you enjoy.
No matter how you look at it, $14 is not a lot of money to spend each day, but it's certainly enough to live on considering your situation. |

I can survive off $75 so I will bank the rest, possibly $50 but I have to live well below my means $75 to me would be a comfort zone. I just wouldnt eat out as much, vegetables, fruits, chicken, pasta dishes will set me straight, plus I know where to shop to get the most for my money. |

I know people that can allow their whole family to live of this amount..
just keep a written record of ALL spending for the first few weeks so that you acclimatise to the amount you have. the first couple of weeks will be 'stretch' anyway... books, materials,, drinking with new people... but keep your head focused on the long term..
and have a ball!!

I could if I had to but it's not fun and not easy. But, I had a very tight budget when I first moved out on my own as a new college graduate. You do what you have to do at first. But, don't worry. Your salary will increase soon after you get a little experience. But, when that happens, just don't forget the lessons you learned while surviving on a very tight budget. That's when a lot of young people get into trouble with credit cards and start living beyond their means. |
