I opened my first current (cheque) account with the TSB shortly after my 16th birthday with no problems. True I was already a saving account customer but as long as you have some ID and proof of your address you should not have any problems.

However, you will only be given an ATM card to access your cash and a cheque book but no guarentee card until you are 18. Some banks might be willing to give you an Electron or Solo card but as these are hardly accepted anywhere they are not much use.

If you speak to the bank and your parents you might find the bank is willing to issue a Debit card (Switch or Visa Delta) with cheque guarentee facility if your parents are willing to stand as guarentors that you will not go into debt. Worked for me, especially as I was earning regular money at the time.

Your best bet is to make an appointment to speak to either a personal banking advisor or the manager to discuss your options.

Yes, you can. Many banks will bend over backwards to give you a basic bank account - maybe a student account if you wish, its up to you really.

At 16, the amount of legal control your parents have over your decisions is limited. They can't now, for example, stop you from joining a political party or starting an uprising... interesting thought, huh?

At 18 though, all legal control is removed as you're now an adult.

Woop Woop!

In UK and Ireland, to open any bank account, even a savings account, you need photo ID and a utility bill (for example phone or electricity bill) to meet regulations against Money Laundering. Most 16 year olds wouldn't have bills in their own name, and some might not have a passport for photo ID. Where a parent helps a child to open an account, the bank will accept the parent's proof of ID instead.

I believe you can. Go to your local bank, sign in to speak to one of the officers, and they should be able to walk you through the process. It's painless.

Yes!

In the UK you can, but obviously you cant apply for any credit until 18, HSBC or Natwest are good banks to deal with.

Bank of America will allow you to open one as long as your are older than 16 can produce 2 pieces of Id's (one of them being state or government issued). You will not be allowed to have a debit card though. Only an ATM card.
