Can you set up joint bank accounts for a few friends?
Myself and my 2 house amtes want to set up a joint bank accounts together for bills etc. My friend thinks there are 'friend joint bank accounts'. Is this true, if so where are they???

SARA H
you can get any regular account even if you are not related/in a relationship etc. If there are more than 2 on the account only certainbanks do it. Try barclays or natwest, I have an account through Barclays with my 3 friends where we save for holiday money etc. Hope this helps. xxx

Yes you can.

Its just a normal current account that has 3 parties.

You will all need Identification and proof of address and you will all be credit checked by the bank that opens the account.

You will all be equally entitled to and liable for any balance on the account.

It will need a lot of trust from all parties.

You will instruct the bank by way of a mandate to allow all or any combinations of you to sign cheques direct debits etc

I think you can, but it could mean trouble in the long run.. be careful, you may think you really know your house mates but you never know... think about it carefully, we have a home business and wanted to put our driver on the account and our banker strongly advised against it.. that was TCF

Dude, you must be smoking too many "joints" if you think this idea would ever work, please....

Here in the United States several individuals can apply to open a joint bank account and who ever is going to make deposits or write checks just signs the application. It is nothing new co-habiting individuals (who at the on set, claim to be friends) do it all the time. They both share in the responsibility of keeping the account balanced or can be sued to collect for unpaid overdraws. Which can be a problem for the most responsible person because it is always he who ends up holding the bag, be it empty or worse. But what do I know, I am just an American girl.

sadee
ya u can do it ......
if u want to get more information abt bank accounts..try this..

You can set up joint accounts, though they are usually used by married couples. If you set up a joint account with people such as you describe, be sure the administrator of the account is fully bonded and insured - otherwise you are very very likely to come to regret even thinking about such an account. Such things get real complicated real fast! Being young and idealistic, you probably can't imagine your friends shafting you, but it happens all the time! Your best bet is to talk to a professional banker about the best options for you and your friends - all you need to do is, one of you needs to have an active account at a bank. Such counselling services are part of the services banks offer, but only to those who have accounts with them. You just go in or call and ask for an appointment with an adviser - you may have to explain just what it is you want to talk about when you call to make the appointment so that the person you speak to can determine who best to set up your appointment with.

There are ways to get the same bank account. I would go see your local bank.

TheYorkshireRose
yes you can. you will have to sign a joint account mandate stating that you are all responsible for the acount should you go into arrears etc.
you will also sign to determine how you will operate the account e.g. any one of you can sign the cheques (you will have to trust each other!) or any 2 of you can sign, or you can have it so that the 3 of you must sign.

You can have joint accounts with anyone you like. Just be careful that you don't get into debt or other trouble with these friends.

RUTH M
yes you can, but as above be very careful, if it is to cover bill paying only you would have to be assured by each friend and yourself that they won't drop you in the s--t. I wouldn't do it personally. xx

litpooo
asking for trouble if you do that

paige
you could but you shouldn't. doing it for family and close friends are a major headache much less for a new friend. It's a bad idea, very bad.

yes, you can. These are aimed at all sorts of voluntary organisatons such as scouts, charities, community groups etc.

COOP do the best, natwest, postoffice and most others do them.

You may have to pay if you are not a charity and don't pay in any salaries.

Or you can just have any current account with joint access.

Billy Bob
It is possible. It may be easier to set it up in the name of a trust. A partnership works too but could potentially involve stupid tax reporting.
