Can you use a debit card for online purchases?
I was wondering because in a year 1/2 I will be in college and well I don't want a credit card, because they are nothing but debt, but I think I will probobly be making online percheses wile I am in college as well as going on Ebay to buy things, and well I don't know how all that works. But does a debit card work the same way for online perches as a credit card?

If it is a VISA or Mastercard debit card yes you can make online purchases. But be careful of the level of security for the commerce website.

Yes. I use my debit card all the time online. You should be fine. Good ups on not getting a credit card!

Does your debit card has a visa or mastercard logo on it? If so, it is called Check Card and as long as you have ENOUGH money to cover the purchase. Yes, you can do so...It is like writing a check, so you NEED to have the money in the account.

bru86whi
yeah

Pat
Yep. Works just like a credit card.

FinanceMan
It is said that 'debit card' is a better option than to a "Credit Card".
Credit cards make one tempted to avail loan/credit whereas Debit card do not. It is used only when you have positive balances in your account with the Bank. In the shopping malls or else where where you are physically present, its used as an ATM card.

The answer is " Yes" but not on the Internet - like eBay(s).

As long as your debit card has the logo of a major credit card, such as VISA or MasterCard, it can be used as you would a credit card.

Good luck in college and congratulations on wanting to be responsible about your credit. So many credit card companies target college students. Good for you for wanting to make a mature and responsible financial decision.

YES!! gets you to spend more :) well at least I go in to buy one thing, and come out with 2. Just follow up with your statements, to see your purchases. Like with everything just double check.

Having a Credit card and wisely using it is a good thing Kayla. You build up your credit which will be needed.

Did you sit there and write 'purchases' 3 times 3 different ways without knowing it? ;)

Yes..as long as it has a credit card logo on it like mastercard. The money comes out directly from your checking account though..it's not revolving credit where you pay later.

DantastikMan
Yes, a debit card would work the same way - just make sure your bank gives you debit card that has the capabilities of a credit card (meaning visa or m.c. logo on it) so it can utilize the processing system already in place (and you wont have to enter your pin like in a store).
Although a credit card posses problems, if you can find a card that has no fees - you should open one and just put it away. Just don't use it. The card would add to your credit history and raise your credit score over time. This will be useful down the road when you need a major loan for a car or house.

Kenzie :P
yeah it does...On your debit card should be a credit card symbol(mastercard, visa, etc...) just type that in for credit card and it works...

ksukelley
Not all retailers will permit the use of debit cards, but most do. For safety reasons, I would suggest you get choose a debit card/bank that offers solid online security. Bank of America offers discount savings accounts for college students and their security measures are very tight (in my experience). They also guarantee your safety against online theft. Other options include "verified by Visa" or getting a credit card that you use just for online purchases (perhaps one that offers aliases, and money back - like Discover).

FYI, you need to read a bit more about how credit cards/debit cards work before you get involved with them. Not all credit cards are bad, it is all in how you use them. Paying them off immediately is key to good credit. Also, fees from debit cards can be just as bad or worse than credit cards.
Just do some searching before you make any decisions.

Good Luck!
