OK, so here's the deal. My husband got his paycheck last week, signed it and left it at the house. He then went out of town for the next few weeks due to business. I had plenty of money to last UNTIL my car broke down on Friday and I had to pay A LOT to get it repaired on Monday. Now, I'm running low on funds and I have to pay the mortgage, grocery shop, etc. We do not have a bank account (stupid, yes, but we closed ours a month ago due to the fact that we were getting screwed and didn't have time to open another one at another bank.) Is there any way that I can get it cashed, or does he have to be with me? The check is already signed, and yes, we are legally married. THANKS |

Most banks will just have you sign your name below his. If you are married it should definitely not be a problem. My bank does it all the time. |

bring it to a check cashing place and just give it to them. Dont explain the situation until they ask. Most likely they will just cash it if it is signed. |

If he already endorsed it on the back with JUST HIS SIGNATURE, then you should have no problem cashing it. If he wrote "for deposit only" or any other conditions with his endorsement then you will not be able to cash it directly.
...unless they have changed banking policy significantly since I left the USA.
By the way, this is why they strongly recommend that people not endorse checks until they are at the bank... or that they endorse it conditionally. If you endorse a check with just your signature than practically anyone could cash it or deposit it! |

If the bank that the account is drawn on is local, you might be able to get it cashed there. Other than that, the only suggestion I have for you is one of those check cashing places....

Unfortunetely, I think he will need to be with you. They are going to ask for ID's. Maybe he could call a check cashing place and give them a code or something to verify you are his wife and need to cash the check. When you show up, give them the code, or whatever, and cash the check.
I doubt that works, but its something. I think he will have to be there. |

You will have to find a place that cashes third party checks. If it is already signed you should be able to cash it. If you have documentation to take with you ie marraige license, mail addressed to both of you, credit card statements I would take it with you and just go to either the old bank you used to go to which will probably charge you a fee but someone may recognize you and just cash it without any hassle or just take everything to check into cash or one of those payday check cashing places. |

dou should be able to endorse the check, prove id and cash it, however you could run into a snag if you don't have a 'home' bank.

I think, if you go to a branch of the bank that ISSUED the check, they will cash it for you. You could also look for a shady "checks cashed" store that will take a small fee to cash it.
OR, use it to open a new, free checking, account at whatever bank is doing a promotion & offering it.

Go to the bank where you use to have an account. They should know the check is good and that the two of you are married. Otherwise, sign it over to yourself, under his name put paid to the order of, your name, then sign under it. If your husband is not going to dispute this or turn you in for fraud, they will have to cash it for you. If they question this, you may have to have the bank call your husband or vice versa in order to cash it. |

Some local convenient stores will cash them. I've cashed my mother and sisters check before(with their permission). You may have to check around but it's usually the ones that are family owned. |

If he has endorsed the check on the back, technically you can also endorse it and cash it yourself. But a lot of banks are reluctant to accept third party checks and you probably will have a difficult time cashing it. Your husband can take the check to the bank account on which the check is drawn - i.e. the employer's bank. They will usually cash it for you even if you don't have an account there. It may help if his boss calls the bank and requests that the bank cash it for your husband as well.
The only other option is to take it to a check-cashing place. Your husband will need to bring ID and pay a small fee. |

well u can sign the check to a friend or family member and have them put it in their bank account and when it clears in three days they will reburse you with cash. also u can go to the check cashing place where your husband cashes his check and hopefully you have a card at the check cashing place, where either u or him could cash it. otherwise, iam not sure. |

if you had a joint bank account, you could deposit it into the account and then write checks off of it, but right now -YER SCREWED
open a bank account as soon as he returns. it is just basic financial sense. |
