IT'S A BOY | Check in Mail Real or Fake? |
I got a check in mail for $4,000dls along with it came a letter saying that I won a sweepstakes sponsored by a group of multi national companies in north america the check is a bank check and is real. In the letter it said that my name was drawn from the federal Computer Data Bank and that my total winning is for 180,000dls out of the 4,000 i have to pay 2,000 in surcharges and government taxes it also said not to attempt to cash check until I call a phone # for activation and further application the bank is here in florida but the check came from canada What to do with check or where can i get more info It also said that I won't have to provide any personal info This sound like a total scam right?Should I still call this person?who phone# I look up and it is a cell phone in canada Additional Details I'm not stupid and don't need luck for the rest of my life I guess I should add that I don't even have a checking account and I don't pay the 2,000dls from my own money I pay it after I cash the check and pay it with that money and I will be paying the money to the goverment not wiring anyone any money but thanks for your answer
Another question I am planning to report this but I don't were to? |

Oh, right, government taxes.
1. Canada does not tax sweepstakes winnings.
2. You pay IRS taxes by sending money directly to the US Treasury, not money by Western Union.
3. You can't cash the check. If you try to cash the check, wherever you cash it will come back to you for the money they couldn't collect, plus NSF fees.
If you are in the US, you can turn it into the FBI. For Canada, check the CRA page.
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/rlss/2008/m03/nr080319-eng.html
The check is NOT real. It may look real, it may be on real check stock, it may show a real bank account number BUT IT WILL NOT BE HONORED. If you try to cash it, your bank will hit you with NSF fees out the kazoo.
Do not participate in this process. |

You should not use your own home or cell phone, you should use a public pay phone somewhere to cal the number. If you call and they ask for personal info then tell them is says "**such and such**" in the letter so I know I don't have to give you personal info. Do not give them your name (they supposedly already have it if you won), your address (same reason), phone number (no reason they need that), Social Security number (NO ONE needs that number for any legitimate reason), the first or last names for ANY relative or friend, ANY bank account number (NO legitimate reason to ask that), and other number of any kind, any email address, any place you work now or the past, ANY other personal info. A REAL prize does not require you to _pay_ anything to get it. |

It's fake.
The check will bounce but only after you send the $2000 to them leaving you on the hook for the money.
Edit:
Take it to your bank and turn it over to the person in charge of fraud / loss prevention. |

It's a scam. You cash the cheque, and it seems you got $4000 in your bank account. So of course, you'll happily go and pay the $2000 fee to get the rest of your "winnings". But of course, a week or two later, the cheque bounces, the $4000 disappears from your account, and you're out another $2000.
These kind of scams have been happening for decades. Even if you didn't know that, surely your common sense would have told you: large check in an insecure, cheaply-posted envelope, winning a contest you never entered, your name and address magically drawn from some list by an organisation that seems all too happy to just hand out money to people out of their own pockets...SURELY something in that would have triggered your "there's something not right about this" part of your brain.
But it seems on this occasion, your common sense has failed you. Good luck with the rest of your life, you'll need it. |

It's a scam. Don't cash it. You know it's a scam when you're winning lotteries that you never entered in, or bought a lottery ticket for. Most of the time the person doing the scam is overseas somewhere and wants you to cash the check and wire money to them for convenience charges or delivery fees. Your bank won't catch it until it's too late, could be weeks later. You will be responsible to pay the bank back the money they gave you to cash the check, and possibly face jail time. Don't cash it, it's a scam! Call the police and make a report of it. The police will take the check for evidence, so don't destroy it. They will probably also need the envelope that the check came in, so don't destroy that either. |

there are a lot of scams out there these days,
take the check to your bank, talk to the manager and explain the situation.
tell them that you want them to hold the check for a week and investigate the situation before you get stung in the scam too.
sounds bad but this is the only way to cover your butt.
if you won,you would declare local taxes and not WESTERN UNION money to Africa or Asia or england. |
