Checking Accounts while married?
Is it okay for a husband and wife to have separate checking accounts or have one? I'm asking to get some opinions for when I get married.

Personally, I think it's very odd for a married couple to have separate checking accounts for their everyday use. I undestand having separate accounts with their "rainy day" money. My hubby and I have one account that we use for everything; rent, utilities, groceries, etc. He puts his full check in and I put my full check in every payday. Our savings account is the same way. If he wants to save for something specific, then I'll contribute to it because it will make him happy and he does the same for me. That's just what works for us.

Ultimately, it's up to you and your spouse. Whatever will work best for you is what you should choose, regardless of what others' opinions are. I see many couples who have a joint account for their bills and then separate accounts that they use for whatever they like. Some people even say it's a good idea incase the spouse leaves, you'll have money set aside and can survive without them.

for 25 years we have had only one.
Both of us deposit our paychecks into it and the wife pays the bills....my job is to buy beer and fart!
Works well for us...hee hee

What would be the point of seperate accounts? There is no "my money" and "your money." You are partners - that is the whole point of being married. You share your souls, your bed, your life, but you can't share a bank account?

Scragg
For me and my wife, we share an account. Your married life should be one and so should your finances. I know some that have separate accounts because one is a poor manager of money or one is too miserly. Having separate accounts can cause arguments over who pays for what out of their funds. If at all possible, have only one account.

We have a joint account... But also maintained our personal accounts...

We give ourselves a monthly allowance from our joint account of $50... Then we use this for things like buying each other gifts at bithdays, christmas etc... Its tough to surprise a sig. other when you have joint accounts.

Just my opinion :)

It's OK, may even be sensible, but can cause friction. Should have joint account to pay bills. Two shall become as one.

lopez76g
Its advised for financial reason and give the illusion of being married to others , but you can always have another account for yourself and have it split at direct deposit to the appropriate account * ez duz it !

OOOHHHHH good ????

Some couples like to keep seperate accounts, some like to combine and some like to do 2 seperate and have 1 joint. the joint acct is where they both deposit the same amount of money into each month and where the household bills come out of.

Not everyones views are the same when it comes to money. If you have a spouse that tends to blow his whole paycheck and yours too, I'd suggest keeping a seperate account.

We have almost always had one account and we have always had overdraft protection. For spending management the best plan is to only use a checking account to receive deposits, make fixed monthly payments, withdraw the cash for your budgeted expenses. So both of you carry cash and no check book (or credit card).

Sure it's OK. there is no law for or against it.

It's fair to have seperate accounts but, after 5 years of marriage my wife and I finally joined our accounts because it was handier and easier to keep our budget in check. It also depends on your 'level' of trust with your partner...

You should always have your own money....that includes a secret stash! I mean it. Keep it hidden away where the court cannot find it.

Sure it's OK and I encourage it.
