pay them off and keep them open, although get rid of the cards that have any annual premium. It is beneficial to keep a minimum balance, up to 30% of the high credit to maintain a good credit rating, that is if you have no other type of credit reporting installment. |

if you don't carry a balance, why not keep them open,it doesn't cost anything, and you never know when you might need them. |

Keep them open as long as they do not carry annual fees.
Closing accounts will hurt you in two ways.
1. You could be closing your oldest account.
Length of credit history is a whopping 15% of your fico - but an annual fee is never worth this.
2. It will reduce the overall available unused credit card limits on your cards.
Creditors like to see a lot of unused cash.
Keep using your cards - usage is important.
Use one for gas and one for food and pay in full each month.
You will never pay interest and end up with amazing scores.
47% of Americans use credit cards this way - never paying interest.
Be one of them - be smart.
Get rid of store cards - they are useless - unless it's your oldest one.

If you are not buying anything major in the next 18 months, close them.
With a couple of exceptions --
Unless you have real problem with spending, "everyone" can justify 1-3 cards. If you cannot pay off your balance every month in full, you have a problem. (Yes, I am a hard @ss. I'll make a single exception every 18 months, but you still have to pay in full within 60 days)
If you have had a card with significantly longer than your others, you should keep that one open.
If one of the cards has a significantly larger credit line, you should keep that one open. |
