MarkSLC | Credit cards: do you trust them? |
Do you trust yourself with credit cards? I'm 27 and have only recently applied for my first one. Well, my bank "who gives you extra..." cajoled me into it somewhat.
I've always been against credit cards, as I know people who have gone willy-nilly; next thing you know you owe thousands and the interest hikes right up.
I'm just going to be very prudent with this - I've heard to many horror stories - often ending in bailiffs and collection agencies. |

Willpower. I know it can be hard sometimes but that is the key to using a credit card. Make it work for you, that's what I tell people (i work in a bank). Use it for emergencies, make the most of the interest free period, put some money to one side when you know you have used it or better still, pay it off as soon as you get the bill. And remember, you can say "No", they were just doing their job when they asked you about the card-you allowed yourself to be "cajoled" into it. If you really are not happy then cancel the card, simple. |

Your best bet is to cut it up, send it back and cancel your account. Youve managed for 27 years without it. Save up for stuff instead. I know youre going to be prudent, but better safe than sorry eh? |

The real question is not whether you should trust credit cards, it's whether you should trust *yourself* with credit cards. |

Don't use it if you haven't enough cash to pay for your goods. Use it instead of carrying cash and pay it in full monthly. Card companies aren't too keen on this, they make money from the interest you could pay - as well as charging businesses for each transaction. |

There's nothing wrong with credit cards; just the way people use them. Be conservative, pay as you go and you'll be fine. |

Lol I trust myself with them. I use mine for the extra protection if something goes wrong. Eg I bought concert tickets and the co went bust. Because I used my credit card I got my money back. Basically if I cant afford it I dont buy it. I pay the full amount on time so I dont incur any charges or interest. |

Trust the card... yes - never been let down by a lump of plastic yet - trust the provider... no
CC's are great as you can protect yourself from faulty goods etc.
Set up a direct debit to clear the card each month - no credit - no problem in the long term
make sure the limit is manageable and DO NOT INCREASE IT
enjoy
ps have you seen the news about hbos today - not doing too well on the financial market!!! - but you as a loyal customer are helping them remain solvant!! |

i dont despite having 2 of them.but what pisses me off is when they expect you to pay over the phone.we often told to be aware of fraud ,because you dont know who you are really talking to. |

You will need a credit card when you need to get airline tickets, a hotel room and a rental car at your destination without leaving your kitchen table. It is very difficult to do this without a credit card via on-line or by telephone. |

Trust me you don't want to get a card. I had one and basically maxed it out. Was using it to pay for crap even though at the time i had enough to just buy it there and then. Now i am paying for it by means of a loan. As the 1st person has said, and a message that i've told myself, is if i can afford it, i'll buy it, if not then i won't. Anything i buy now is done through my debit card or cash. never again will i even think about getting a credit card no matter how badly i want something. |

Credit cards are good for one thing. Getting into debt.
They are designed to get you into debt and keep you in debt.
A debit card will do anything a credit card will do except get you into debt. They have all the protection that a credit card has as long as it has a Visa or a mastercard logo on it. |

Credit cards are a tool we use to purchase goods and services. You will need it to rent a car and it makes it easier to get a hotel room.
Credit cards are NOT evil nor is it good. Like any tool, if used incorrectly it can hurt someone. If credit cards are used incorrectly it can hurt the credit rating of the user.
The best way to use a credit card is not to carry a balance and pay it off every month. Also don't use the credit card unless you have the cash in the bank to pay it off in the current billing period. |

I am 50 and I have never had a credit card. Not because of the horror stories, but because of my mother, she was militant in her anti credit card philosophy and it rubbed off on me. I see no reason to pay a company a portion of my income just so I do not have to use cash, I have no problem with cash, I use it every day. Where is the credit card slot on a vending machine my friend? I know why the credit card companies want us all to use credit cards, more money for them, but I do not see why most people do not see this. If I can afford to pay a credit card bill I can certainly afford to purchase what I need without paying the credit card people. F**k them. I suggest that when this card comes in the mail that you shred it, burn it and have the ashes exorcised by a priest. |

Is the question "Can I trust the credit card companies?" Or is it "Can I trust myself to not overextend with a credit card?"
No matter what, if you charge any kind of balance to a credit card, you open yourself up to paying interest on the card if you keep that balance beyond the closing date. It's really a matter of self-control and either knowing you will pay the balance off in full each month, or if not, just not use one, period. My theory: if you can pay for things with cash, why hassle with charging then paying it off?
By the way, Orpheus, you are now my hero. I am 25 and also do not owe a dime to any credit card company. Cash is king. |

They're great to have as long as you don't get in over your head. Just make sure you have the money available when you get something and pay it off when the bill comes. The way you get into trouble is when you carry a balance and can only make minimum payments each month. |

I have plenty of credit cards and I am not tempted to run up high balances. The question comes down to self-control. If you are the type of person who would run out and spend money you don't have, then don't get one. But if you are responsible about it, you'll be fine. Having credit cards are good for your credit score, as long as you're not late on payments or max out the card. |
