Debt Matters, debt management plan?
Hi,
Ive foolishly managed to get myself into quite a bit of debt (£8000), which im struugling to pay back every month. Now i realise it was stupid to get into this much debt in the 1st place so i dont need any sarcastic or unhelpful comments about that, all im askin is for some advice on a debt management plan.
I have been offered a plan by Debt Matters to pay bac £200 a month (£30 of which is their fee) over 3 and a half years.
This seems like a good opportunity for me to get on top of my debts.
PLEASE could any one tell me if they know of 'Debt Matters' or have used them before, and how they found them
Thank you very much

The sums don't add up.

You are going to pay £200 - £30 = £170 a month for 42 months. That equals £7140 which is short of £8000 and assumes none of the people you are repaying will charge any interest for three and a half years.

This company are going to take £1260 off you. That is a lot of money.

You can get the same thing for free by going to your local branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau. They will help you set up a debt managment programme, deal with the people you owe money to and charge no fee.

Avoid companies who want to charge you, when Citizens Advice help you for no fee.

Good luck and well done for taking the initiative in getting things sorted out.

Before you do anything rash like consolidate loans or anything please check out www.cccs.co.uk this is a charity run website that helps people in debt get out of debt, I got a lot of advise from them and a friend pays off her debys through them and highly recommends it. They will not charge a fee and will do their best to agree payments with your debtors (even getting interest dropped).

I was in the same boat as you and it seems like a good idea at the time I did something very simelar however youhave 2 other options that may be cheaper.

1. Search around for debt consolidation or goto the CAB as previously suggested some companies will do everything that Debt Matters would do only they dont take a cut which means more money to your creditors and the debt goes quicker.

2. Call the credit card companies ask to speak to someone that can go over your expenditure with you and come to an agreement direct, this will show you are willing to pay the momey back and suprisingly most places are greatful your even trying to pay it back and not taking the easy route ie bankrupcy etc.

Hope this info helps.

I am with a company called baines and ernst who are brilliant. I owe about the same as you but im only paying £148 a month. When you go with debt managment they get the companys to stop all interest on the accounts which brings your debt right down. The good thing about it is no more 'i want your money' phone calls. well worth going with it

I've got well more debt than you so there's always someone worse than yourself!
I have debt management plan with the consumer credit counselling service, can't fault them they've been great & their services are completly free cos they're a charity.Don't go to firm that charges you to help you cos less of your money is going to pay debts then.Good luck, i know how you feel.

Hi, my partner and i are in the same boat dont worry to much if you can help it i know its hard not to, deffinetly get help from citizens advice they are brilliant, they will write to all your creditors and come to an arrangement of how much you can afford just make sure if you have a mortgage or any other secured loans that they are your priority cos we nearly got repossesed, good luck i hope it works out for you

sorry to hear of your situation.

to be honest i'd go for some professional advice. your local council can make an appt with you to visit their Welfare Rights Dept, they will be able to tell you whats best to do.

good luck mate. and listen, dont let it worry you, most of us have debts.

Do not consolidate. Do not file for bankruptcy. Here is what you do. You have 8.000 pounds in debt. Do not get discouraged over it. That is around 16,000 dollars the only way I know how to relate.Pay min payments on all your other credit cards. Then pay as much as you can on that small credit card. To pay off 8,000 pounds should take you roughly around 2 years I do not know how much you make.Get rid of the smaller ones first you will fill much better. I started doing this plan 3 months ago I had 10k in debt, Dollars that is.Ive cut it down to 6,500. in 3 months with just paying min on multiple card's and paying what I could on the smaller card. Ive gotten rid of 2 credit cards this way. Also to make this work before you buy something think about of you need it or if you want it. You need food but do you need to buy that Hershey's dark chocolate bar? If you need money to go out put a certain amount aside each month or two weeks budget yourself, Its hard but trust me it is worth it. And if you just want it do not get it till you pay off your debt.

Well, if you have no assets, what can they do?

Just ignore them!

My grandfather has lost £5,000 of his savings which he had invested with Barclays bank - an ISA or something like that. So, if the city boys and unscrupulous banks steal from us - we can ruddy well steal back from them.

Just ignore them... if they threated with bailiffs - just say you don't own anything.

Don't be scared of these establishments. It's time they were taught a lesson and we are a force not ever to be reckoned with.
